Digital camera reviews of Escort Passport 8500 X50 Radar and Laser Detector (Red Display)Digital camera Review: 15 States 100 mph NO TICKETS! Summary: 5 Stars
In A word the Passport 8500 is awesome. I picked it up for a road trip across the southern USA. I tested it out around Los Angeles and got a few false alarms but I also found a few motor cops hiding. We hit the road for 5 weeks and did not get a single ticket. The unit was easy to use and we quickly learned the signal types. We spotted police units approaching from behind; we were alerted to POP before it was too late. It even caught a frontal blast of Laser, I jammed on the brakes and saw the police car in the center divider, no ticket. The X band went off for every construction zone but that was to be expected. Overall it spotted all radar traps and saved us a lot of money. I would never drive across the country without this unit. Worth the price.
Digital camera Review: 6 stars - worth every penny Summary: 5 Stars
I've had this item for 6 months, and it detects cop cars like an eagle grabbing a chicken. Every Smokey within a half mile shows up flawllessly -
hiding in culverts, cruising along, coming up behind you. And I don't get very many false hits in the city. I actually like false hits, because they make me drive slower.
I like this item so much I feel compelled to burst into song:
My Passport is my watchful eagle,
sitting on my dashboard all alone,
it screeches at every legal beagle
hiding under any stone.
Im not caught by Smokey,
Im happy as a clam,
not going to the pokey,
not going to the slam
I wave at every law
a cheerful citizen am I
slow when I see his square jaw,
then step on it - goodbye!
I shoulda bought one years ago!
Digital camera Review: 8500 X50 Summary: 4 Stars
Use the radar detector everday as law enforcement in Houston has become very aggressive with their ticket writing due to budget short fall (my opinion). Rec'd a speeding ticket for 63 in a 55. First ticket since '83.
The feature that works but not worth the money to have, but all the good detectors have is the POP for laser guns. If the detector goes off as a result of a laser gun, law enforcement has you, and nothing you can do. The other day, I was in a school zone doing 20, and law enforcement was zapping people, and unit never went off. Drove through it 3 times and one time law enforcement did point at me, and unit went off. Of course, I was doing 20. Therefore, laser has to be pointed at you for the detector to give a warning and it is too late if you were speeding. In dicussion of other people with other makes of detectors, they agree, a detector with POP will not protect you against a laser.
Digital camera Review: 8500X50 reviews Summary: 5 Stars
Before purchasing the 8500X50 I read with interest many of the reviews and was able to determine the pros and cons of the unit. I also contacted Escort directly regarding the concerns some had regarding the failure of their unit to calibrate and work. As noted in one review and confirmed by Escort leaving the unit on all the time (hot cigarette lighter) results in program problems..and no problems if power to your lighter plug disconnects when the ignition is turned off...Since Escort is now offering an 80 dollar credit for an old detector with free shipping, I ordered from them ... sorry Amazon but competition rules.
Right out of the box, plugged it in and it works perfectly...just as I expected.
While reviews are helpful one must do some research and Escort would not be selling a product that didn't work...The feature I most like is the auto mute mode...after a loud alert the sound is reduced....no need to use mute button.
Digital camera Review: A good radar detector although pricey Summary: 4 Stars
This is my second escort. I bought it to replace a 6 year old one that had a problem with going off for no reason. I would say it is a good detector, although a bit pricey. It works well and seems to detect radar before radar finds me. I have also used whistler detectors and I think for about 200 you could get a whistler whcih would give almost as good protection. I drive 500 miles a week so I was willing to pay for the escort. My wife wants her first dectector and I am going to get a whistler for her. There is one thing I noticed with these detectors they do not go into full dark mode when you select voltage monitor for a display setting. My old escort did. I think it is adesign flaw as I tried two different5 detecotor and they both did it. There are lots of features and setting which allow you to set the detector to you needs and preferences. I have the normal amount of falseing from alarms etc. The unit seems to filter falses pretty well though.
Would I recomment this.....yes. Would I buy again ......yes. Could you get something almost as good for a few bucks less......yes.
Do not buy a $100 dollar detector though because you will not get the performance. You will get a beep saying pullover 'cuz your clocked and getting a ticket.
