Digital camera Review: Great Earthquake Emergency Multi-Purpose Radio

We bought this radio for our earthquake kit and love it. A few turns of the hand crank, and you have a bright 3-LED flashlight and radio. No worries about batteries running down or corroding the radio. But, hey, put it in the sun, and let the solar panel charge it for you. It also has the best radio [AM/FM/NOAA]at about any price. I can't use the USB phone charger, but I'm sure many can. The unit is compact, attractive, and inexpensive. Great flashlight/radio at great price. I'm thinking about buying more and giving them as gifts.

To start this seems to be a great little backup radio when the power goes out. It's more solid and works much better than the cheap imported one it replaced. Cranking the handle a little does provide a very reasonable amount of radio listening time.
My only real problem is that I bought this for it's ability to charge my cell phone. I should have read the other reviews more carefully. It *will not charge an iPhone 3GS*. For a lot of people that is not a problem but with over 20 million iPhones sold it should be mentioned in the product literature.
I called eton customer service and the guy was less than helpful. He said to ignore the warning that popped up on the phone stating that it was not compatible and it would charge anyway. While you can ignore the warning and keep cranking the battery indicator never changes to show the phone is charging. =sorry, no charge.
He also mentioned that if it did work it only charges while your actively cranking at about 50ma and it worked that should give you about 1-2 min. of talk time for 10 min. of cranking. Of course the same guy told me it would charge if I just keep cranking. I tried, it was a waste of time.
Great idea, good little radio, non-functional charging for iPhone 3GS.

This is a great compact radio for hiking or camping trips when an emergency could arise. This is not for casual use in my opinion but for emergencies. The cell phone charger requires ALOT of cranking for 1 minute of use, it's only an added perk to this unit in extereme situations. All other feaures work well. The radio will keep a station in tune if not on the go. If you need a cell phone charger or a radio for enjoyment say hiking or camping purchase an item for that situation. This unit works as intended and is a great compact unit for emergency/ survival use. GREAT Red Cross unit! I purchased for survival pack, have used it in power outages, worked well. The solor power is the best feature, next to it's size.

I opened the package and thought, Oh no, it is too small to be what I expected. BUT then I gave it a crank lifted the antenna and dialed in local radio and to my hearts content it sounded good. Runs for a LONG time on just a few cranks. Also like the idea of all of it's features. I have this in my "disaster pack" ready just in case. Hope I'll never need it, but if I do, I know it works! and I can count on it to do what it says it will do!!! Thanks!!!
