Digital camera reviews of Etón American Red Cross ARCFR160R Microlink Self-Powered AM/FM/NOAA Weather Radio with Flashlight, Solar Power and Cell Phone Charger (Red)

Digital camera Review: Great emergency radio
Summary: 4 Stars

I bought this regular radio, weather radio, flashlight and phone charger for emergencies when we loose power. It works great. The radio is sometimes hard to get stations in, but most of the strong ones come in fine. The crank works good and the solar charging feature is very nice. I can't believe how small this is. We lost power a month or so ago and I used this. It really works good. For the money, this is a cheap emergency item to have in an house or if you are away on vacation and need something portable.

Digital camera Review: Great flashlight with cell phone charger, mediocre radio
Summary: 4 Stars

As a disaster relief volunteer, I recommend this to be your first purchase.

Think about most disasters! Power is the first thing you'll lose. Then you'll be scramblng for flashlights and batteries. The FR160R is the first thing you should grab. It's small and fits easily in a bedside drawer. First, it's a decent flashlight. Second, it has a handcrank to recharge it . . . that will be of utmost importance over the next few days. That also means it can charge other stuff . . . like a cell phone . . . the second most important piece of equipment you should have. Lastly, it's a radio. The reception isn't great and that's because reception takes power and power must be conserved.

Comments: Buy a camera case to put it in. Make sure it has a belt loop. You will want to have this unit with you at all times during an emergency. Next, check your cell phone to make sure you have the wiring to charge it from the FR160R's USB port. It would have been nice to have a cigarette lighter port, since we all have car adapters for our phones, but the unit would have to be bigger for that to happen.

The FR160R has a solar panel which requires you to leave it unattended in the sun all day. Never put this unit down for a minute. This unit will be the most popular device in your crowd and will disappear in nanoseconds.

It also has an earphone port, but earphones are not included, and I question that earphones would improve the sound quality.

Overall, a good unit!

Digital camera Review: Great for an emergency kit.
Summary: 4 Stars

I got this primarily for my disaster preparedness kit. The USB charger worked with my old (unlocked for any carrier SIM) Motorola RAZR. The radio played on after a few cranks and while under office lights. The flashlight was okay. I like the compact size of it because it does not take much room in the kit.

Digital camera Review: Great little weather radio
Summary: 5 Stars

I live in the south with lots of fun thunderstorms. After getting hit with a tornado a couple of years ago I stocked up on batteries and crank powered flashlights but never an actual weather radio. When storms started a couple of days ago at midnight I decided I should get something to allow me to stay in touch with or without power. I did some research and this little model looked like a good mix of features with price. I've only had it for a couple of days and haven't tried the cell charger but the crank charger & solar charger seem to power the radio very nicely. I plan to buy a few for my family members...

Digital camera Review: Great radio
Summary: 5 Stars

Great product. power consumption is minimal, and with solar and crank options, a very very good emergency tool. USB charger work good as well, although you'll have to crank it a lot to get a good charge on your cell phone. Speaker is very loud, and the constructioon is very solid, very well made product.
