Digital camera reviews of Etymotic Research ER20 High-Fidelity Earplugs (Baby Blue with Clear Stem)Digital camera Review: Buy these first, not the regular sized ER20s! Summary: 5 Stars
Yeah, I bought both sizes--the standard size first. And boy was that a mistake. I found that I had to shove them painfully into my ears to get the maximum level of sound reduction. Still, I like them enough that I decided to buy the Baby Blues.
And they fit perfectly on the first try, effortlessly.
I'd recommend that you purchase these Baby Blues FIRST before stepping up to the Standard sized ER20s, because you can insert the Baby Blues deeply into a typical sized ear canal and get maximum sound reduction much more easily than you can force fit the Standard size into a smaller ear canal. In other words, since you essentially face a 50/50 chance that either the Baby Blues or the Standards will fit, you might as well go with the ones that can work well enough even if they don't fit perfectly: the Baby Blues.
Digital camera Review: Can't imagine going to a show without these! Summary: 5 Stars
I've always had difficulty with full size earplugs and found them to be annoying.
Turns out the problem wasn't the manufacturer of the earplugs, it was the size!
Since I received the Baby Blues I've been to several shows and I have to say, they're the best thing ever!
Digital camera Review: Convenient hearing protection Summary: 5 Stars
I find these more comfortable than the normal, white Etymotic ER20s. The neck strap and carry pouch make them extra convenient. I've bought three total, so I've always got a set with me whether around town or on travel.
Digital camera Review: Didn't work for me! Summary: 1 Stars
I attended a concert a few weeks ago and, stupidly, did not wear ear plugs. As a result I have some hearing loss in my right ear and tinnitus. In an attempt to mitigate any further damage, I've been researching ear plugs. I thought these looked like a great option; I could still get a sense of the music and what was going on around me, but would still protect my ears.
However, these were EXTREMELY uncomfortable and actually sent me to a local emergency clinic! First off, I do have small ear canals, which is why I ordered the baby blue version. I inserted them properly, and thought they were pretty uncomfortable because they're so stiff. But I survived and acclimated somewhat. However, when I removed them it seemed pretty painful, but I figured that might be par for the course.
However, after using these a second time, I noticed blood upon the ear plugs after removing them! I was a bit freaked out and was afraid I'd punctured my ear drums or something (unlikely, I know, but better safe than sorry) so I went in to the local emergency clinic to have my ears looked out. The doc said my ear canals were "all ripped up" and bloody due to the ear plugs.
So, I'm really happy these work well for most people! However, if you have small ear canals or very sensitive ear canals, you might want to pass these up.
Digital camera Review: Does the job well Summary: 4 Stars
I use these for music festivals after having had a bit too much for decades. These plugs leave a lot of the spectrum in place, so you can still enjoy the music. A rather pleasant surprise was that it is actually easier to talk with people around you as the more direct sound of their voices better climb above the background noise. I would have given the plugs 5 stars if it were possible to use them to cancel noise during your sleep as well, but that's not what these are made for.
