Digital camera reviews of Etymotic Research ER20 High-Fidelity Earplugs (Baby Blue with Clear Stem)Digital camera Review: Downsized from Regular Etys Summary: 5 Stars
I have irritable ears and the regular sized Etys were oftentimes bothersome. These baby blues make everything a lot clearer than the regular sized ones did, and my ears don't ring after I leave the party! I also use them when driving with the windows down because it takes away the background noise of wind blowing and keeps the car music clear.
My only recommendation is that you put them in before you go into the music. It keeps you from having a comparison to what the sound actually is like, and then your mind has no complaints about what the earplugs are blocking.
Digital camera Review: Easy to use, work very well Summary: 5 Stars
I play a brand of ocarina that's pretty loud. I have Meniere's syndrome, which makes my affected ear more sensitive to noise injury and I found that after practicing my ocarina a lot I was getting ringing in my affected ear. These earplugs are far easier to use than foam earplugs and reasonably comfortable. I find that if I leave them in for a couple of hours, my ear canals start to ache a bit, but the aching goes away quickly once I remove the earplugs. Since using the earplugs, the ringing in my Meniere's-affected ear has been less of a problem. Of course, the ocarina doesn't sound the same with the earplugs in; if I really need to know how my playing sounds, I'll listen for a short time with my "good" ear unplugged and after that I find it's very easy to detect errors, even with both ears plugged.
BTW, Amazon says there's a "newer (more expensive) model" of this earplug. As far as I can tell from internet research, the only difference between the old and new models is the change in names of the sizes of earplugs. The "small" size (blue earplugs) is now called "standard."
Digital camera Review: Essential bar hopping hearing protection Summary: 5 Stars
The ER-20s come in two sizes: normal (blue) and large (white). I was using the white ones, but found that the blues fit my ears better. The ER-20s are the only ear protection that allows me to hear what people are saying without being blasted by background "thump thump" bar music. They are easy to wear, easy to clean, and unobtrusive with their their clear plastic stems. No, they don't truly attenuate all frequencies by equal DBs, but they are so superior to cheap foam plugs in that regard there's no comparison whatsoever. Worth every penny.
Digital camera Review: Etymotic Research ER20 Summary: 4 Stars
Good stuff. Fairly low profile. Blocks the noise you want blocked but can still hear things pretty clearly. Great for tuning out background chatter. They are for small ear canals though.
Digital camera Review: Etymotic Research ER20 Baby Blue Ear Plugs with Clear Stem Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased the Baby Blue ear plugs with clear stem for use during classical piano practice in order to reduce prolonged exposure to the intensity of a grand piano's sound during long practice sessions, which otherwise aggravates my tinnitus (ringing in the ears). I am absolutely delighted with the purchase. The Baby Blues definitely reduce intensity to a significant degree without distorting or seriously thinning the sound, and I now use them regularly and wouldn't want to be without them. I also found the small size a perfect fit (I am male, 5'9", 167 pounds, with a more or less ordinary sized head). I should note that, after prolonged use, switching back to "full sound" without the plugs can be a shock: the natural sound is overwhelming by contrast and requires some time for adjustment. But I would highly recommend the Baby Blues to anyone with similar needs and interests. And a further nice feature: they come in a small, easy-to-use snap-close plastic container that includes a cord for connecting the plugs to each other for safe keeping.
