Digital camera Review: Good Product When the Lights Go Out

Okay, for the price, what you get has real value and it's well made but you wouldn't want to drop it. If you want to take it camping I could see it but it would be better for tailgating or motorhomes. It has two LED lights and they are pale with a blueish tint but sufficient in an emergency. I've burned it on high for 36 hours straight using 4 D cell batteries--not included--and it was still going strong. The radio has a small 1" speaker so don't expect great sound quality but for news, weather, and background music it works well enough. You should know that an AC/DC adapter is available from the manufacturer for an additional 16 bucks...Internally, there is a 3.6 volt 300 milliamp ni-cad battery--which is quite small--this is what stores the cranking energy and probably won't last more than a few hours cranked to the max so have some alkaline D cells on hand for best results.
Because of its low power draw and decent enough illumination I bought a second one for household power outages. If I had a beef, it would be that you can't use the handcrank to recharge the D cells. There are nickel metal hydride batteries out there which are rechargeable and have enormous capacity but they specifically say go with alkaline and avoid rechargeables. But hey, for the price it beats smokey oil lamps, candles, or dangerous gas lanterns. By the way, this item is available for a similar price at other retailers--but check the shipping cost--that's where they sock you. So shop around.
