I bought this shredder to replace my 10 year old PS55CC. Last weekend I shredded 5000 letter sized pages. I didn't think I had that much paper in my cabinet! The PS-79Ci handled it just fine. I oiled every time I emptied the basket. The thermal breaker went off several times and I had to let it rest. But that was to be expected. After 5000 pages, it worked and sounded exactly the same as when it was new. Regarding plastic or metal gears, I'm going to say the PS-79Ci has plastic gears. On more expensive shredders like the SB-99Ci, the box clearly states that it has metal gears. The box for the PS-79Ci doesn't say anything. A little horse sense says that if it had metal gears, Fellowes wouldn't keep it a secret. I don't think it matters though. After 10 years of suffering my abuse, it was the circuit board that finally failed on my PS55CC. The non-commercial motor and the plastic gears on that shredder survived just fine.
