Digital camera reviews of Flip MinoHD Video Camera - Black, 4 GB, 1 Hour (1st Generation) OLD MODEL

Digital camera Review: Awesome little camera, but...
Summary: 2 Stars

I have had the Flip MinoHD for a little over a year now and it has been a great little camera. Although it does not feature any "steady-cam" capabilities like most larger camcorders, the picture quality is still great. Also, while I often wished the camera would have a greater zoom, it still did the job of getting closer than I could have to many events. Based on my experiences until yesterday (like I said, over a year of use), I would give the product five stars all the way.

But... after I uploaded some video yesterday, I left the Flip plugged into the computer for charging, watched the white light blink for a few seconds and then started working on something else on the computer. About an hour later, my Mac shows me a window that says (basically), "Please don't unplug peripherals until you eject them first." It was referring to my Flip. I had not unplugged it, but it was no longer listed as a device. I unplugged it and tried to turn it on. Not a blink anywhere. Needless to say, after plugging it in various laptops and such, leaving it plugged in for hours at a time, checking the boards to see if anyone else had this problem (which many have) and trying every possible fix out there, I contacted their tech support via chat. The nice person confirmed that I had a dead Flip.

Seriously? A year-old camera? It was just out of the warranty period so... tough luck.

This is why I give the product two stars. I'm not alone in this. Look to see how many people have actually had to use their warranty to replace their Flips. Look to see how many people had these issues right after the warranty period. Yes, it's a great camera, but only while it lasts.

A $200 camera? Really?

Digital camera Review: Awesome little device
Summary: 5 Stars

I had debated whether or not to buy one of these until one evening I watched some very old home movies with the kids and realized that we hardly ever recorded anything anymore.

We have a "normal" camcorder but end up not using it very much - it's just too much work to drag it out, get it turned on, find a tape, and get it started it (and it seems like the battery is always low).

With the Flip, however, it's about as quick to get up and running as a digital camera - just grab it and turn it on. Now we capture moments on video all the time.

The video quality is actually quite good. At first I thought the 1 hour limit on storage would be a problem, but then I realized I pretty much never need to record that much continuous time anyway.

Digital camera Review: Awesome!!
Summary: 5 Stars

I love my Flip! What a fun and easy way to make and share videos. I highly recommend this product..Well done flip!!

Digital camera Review: Awful Camera!
Summary: 1 Stars

I purchased this camera because of the great reviews, and boy was I sorry! I am a mom just wanting a small camera to take with me on the go. This looked like a good camera. I took some videos inside and they were grainy. Then I tried loading the installed software on my computer and it wouldn't ever load. I contacted customer support, and they were not helpful at all. Then my power button ended up locking up, and I couldn't ever get the camera to turn back on again. Also my computer was messed up for about a week after trying to install the program. I returned this camera and purchased the Kodak Zi6 and I love everything about it! The video quality is much better, even indoors. And Kodak's software is easy to install and very user friendly. The Flip camera needs help!

Digital camera Review: Awful close to perfect

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
As someone who owned one of the original Flip camcorders, one that ran on two AA batteries, I was curious to try this new model. Light enough to carry anywhere, with an intuitive interface-- how could a product that terrific be improved?

I feel like a Six Million Dollar Man voiceover here: "Lighter, stronger, faster. . ." Or whatever. They did it. It's a little smaller, a little easier to hold, with way more memory and the HD is amazing. It makes the video jump off the screen, and for the first time I find myself thinking about using the "take a photo from a video" capabilities. If I'd had this one when I was taking pictures at taekwondo testings, I'd have long since pulled photos of board breaks, for example. Not that I'm not glad to have the videos -- but it's worth thinking about, especially if you have kids in sports. What have you lacked the still photography skills to catch, in your life? The Flip MinoHD can probably help you. Its programs are easy to use and built right in.

The Flip people made it rechargeable from a USB port this time, though, and oddly, that's a negative -- it's why this is a 4 instead of a five. AA batteries are easy to carry, or find if you are losing power. A USB port, well -- getting easier, but not a constant. The built-in USB, which is also how you download photos, is still, like in the earlier model, set at an odd level. Maybe it was designed for a specific type of laptop? On a desktop cpu, it floats at a level that makes me fear for the port and the camera both. On my laptop, I had to put it on a table and wedge the camera's bag under it for both charging and downloading now, instead of just for downloading, like I had to before.

They give you cables for connecting the camera to a TV -- I'd like to see them add a way to charge this from a wall socket, possibly with an alternate head for downloading that would let you set the camera somewhere safe, and not have it dragging in midair. That, to me, is all it would take to make this perfect.
