Digital camera reviews of Flip Ultra Series Camcorder, 60-Minutes (Black) OLD MODELDigital camera Review: Better Read the License Agreement Summary: 4 Stars
I love the Flip video recorder, but I don't love the license agreement that its maker, Pure Digital, wants to impose. Better read it carefully. You'll see that the company wants a non-exclusive, royalty-free license for all time to the rights to your content in some circumstances. Although I've twice asked Pure Digital to clarify this language in the license agreement, no answer. Before you click "I agree," be sure you know what you're giving away.
Digital camera Review: Better than I thought it would be! Summary: 5 Stars
Great little camera. The ease of use is unbelievable! I bought this for my wife to video our boys, and within minutes she had it mastered. Obviously the quality isn't HD, but it is very decent. It blows away tape cameras from just 6-10 years ago. The transferring is very simple too. The software is simple and straight-forward, so anybody can use it with ease.
The only thing that did not go smooth was the installation of the software. Just by hooking the camera up to the USB port the software will launch and install the first time, then run every time after. I installed this on my laptop, all went well. When I tried it on my wife's laptop all that happened was the auto-run started with "open to view files" the only option. I just clicked the install and all went well then. From now on she has to click that every time to get the software to work. Oh well still works great!
Digital camera Review: Better than a camcorder... Summary: 5 Stars
I back up the claim I made in the title by saying that when our first child was born, we rushed out and bought a very fancy video camera that has resided in its fancy case for many years. It has always been too complicated to make sure it was charged, make sure the tape was qeued, make sure there was enough tape, turn it on, wait, and then hope the event wasn't over. We basically assigned it to major events like Christmas where it could rest it on a tripod and record from there. Then we discovered the Flip Video Ultra.
When I first saw it, I was sckeptical. I figured it would have crappy video, poor sound, and just basically stink due to its size and price tag. Boy, was I wrong. The next day, while at work, I called home and my wife informed me that our oldest was dancing and singing for our baby and they were laughing together. I longed to see it and knew that she could never get the camera out in time to capture it properly. I knew at that moment that we had a need for this camera. We ordered it, and I was shooting video within 5 minutes of grasping the box. Wow!
Since then, we have been shooting video. Nothing complex, but video that is anywhere from 5 seconds to 5 minutes long. We have been uploading it to our blog...and we are not tech savy! Our blog has gone from a picture blog to a video-only blog overnight. It is amazing. The video is amazingly clear on your PC and not too shabby on your TV either (we have a 27").
I don't use the included software to edit, I instead explore the memory stick and then import that video into Windows Movie Maker. I then save it to my desktop to upload it to my blog. I am sure the software is great, I am just used to the other.
Buy this, get this as a gift, whatever...just own this device. It is truly a gift to the family.

Flip Video Ultra Series Camcorder, 60-Minutes (Black)
This camera is the way to always have a video camera with you. Its small, light and easy to use. Plus it runs on regular AA batteries. Better video than expected, it does a good job for those short video moments. You may find it awkward to plug the USB connector into your computer if the input is too recessed or other plugs and cables close by. I called the manufacturer with a couple of questions and got a fast friendly and helpful reply.
Digital camera Review: Button is the barrier Summary: 3 Stars
I purchased the Flip Video Cam in Oct 2008. I always do a good deal of research before buying something - both on Amazon and elsewhere on the web. And I am tech savvy.
The main problem with the camcorder is the button. Other reviewers have mentioned this - specifically that you need to press hard. The button is certainly the problem but it is not pressure that is lacking. I believe the contacts are inconsistent. So even if you push hard in the center, pushing straight down, the recording function does not necessary start or stop. Rather you need to wiggle the button until the contact is made. In the two weeks I used this camera, more than 50% of the time, I either missed the moment because I couldn't start recording when I wanted to or the recording went longer than necessary because I couldn't stop it.
A friend suggested something that led me to return this "not yet ready for primetime" item. If you have a decent digital camera, better to spend $25+ on a 4gig memory card which can capture up to an hour of video. The resolution would be better, the zoom would definitely be better and you could save money. This is what I chose to do.
