Digital camera reviews of Flip UltraHD Video Camera - Black, 8 GB, 2 Hours (2nd Generation) OLD MODEL

Digital camera Review: Always on hand...
Summary: 4 Stars

I got this as a gift so I can video on the go. I keep it in it's case in my purse all the time. The transfer software is easy to use and there is an iphone app I use so the videos are easy to access on my phone, and my husbands phone. I love the flip channel you create through the software so that when I save to my channel and delete from the device I can access the video from my phone or any internet access. This is easy to use, easy to store so that it is with you all the time. The only disadvantage is the zoom. The viewing on the the device is excellent, but when watching on computer or tv is doesnt look high-def. Over all I would still recommend as it is great to have with you all the time.

Digital camera Review: Amazing Quality!
Summary: 5 Stars

What a great little camcorder that goes everywhere you go. Couldn't be easier to use plus the quality of the picture is fantastic considering size and price. And speaking of price, Amazon beat every price as found in stores as well as on the web. Why shop anywhere else?

Digital camera Review: Amazing Value For Great Quality
Summary: 5 Stars

Early last year, when I started thinking about making comedy videos again, I thought to myself, "When HD camcorders get below $1,000, I just might have to get one." At that time, I didn't really do any research, or I might have discovered that those existed. And now, there are dozens of cameras below the $500 mark, which is ideal for amateur comedians like me.

After completing the last cycle of the Detroit Second City Training Center (actually located in suburb Novi from 2004 until its 2009 demise), my friends and I were itching to bring some of our semi-scripted bits to YouTube. I hadn't done any video production since some friends and I made a short series of sketch shows in early high school in the mid-1990s. I was mind-boggled by the array of affordable camcorders on Amazon, and after weighing many quality-vs-value criteria, I placed an order for the Flip UltraHD, which arrived in 2 days as ordered. With this camera and some self-taught iMovie skills, my weird comedian friends and I can do everything we want to do.

The Flip UltraHD is so small and so fun to use. You can fit 2-hours of 720p video on the built-in 8 GB card, and a battery pack that can last for the entire shoot. (May need to swap out batteries once if you're doing an hours-long start-stop type of shoot.) The video quality and color accuracy are great in most lighting, as long as you don't have a lot of bright light behind your subjects. Haven't tried much night shooting yet, but in natural and artificial light, the picture looks awesome.

The built-in microphone is good, not perfect. You can't be loud very close to it, or the audio will distort. The sound can be slightly "tinny" sometimes. Otherwise, it's a good condenser mic, and for amateur creative projects, it will definitely get the job done.

The camera's built-in USB allows you to plug it right into a laptop or PC. (The built-in battery pack charges while plugged in, and can be replaced by 2 AA batteries if need be.) The FlipShare software allows you to review and simply edit videos. I haven't extensively used FlipShare, because I prefer to edit with iMovie HD. Furthermore, I run Mac OSX 10.3.9 on a PowerPC G5, and FlipShare software requires 10.4 (Tiger) or higher, so it won't run on my machine. I can still extract the video clips using the Mac Finder. I have used FlipShare for reviewing clips on my girlfriend's Vista-based laptop, and it's pretty user-friendly. Although my understanding is that the editing features are quite limited, especially in terms of audio.

For a 720p camera under 200 dollars, this has been an amazing toy/tool. I look forward to many stupid YouTube comments as a result of having it.

Digital camera Review: Amazing Video
Summary: 5 Stars

Suprisingly Amazing video from this little powerhouse. For quick on the go snip-its of video or all those times you said "Boy I wish I had a video camera right now" well this is the one for you. Great to catch all those unexpected life's memorable moments at the drop of a hat. The quality of the video is very good. The zoom feature is not as advanced as the bigger clunkier video cameras but really decent. The plug and play feature to transfer your videos to your computer couldn't be easier. The software that comes on the camera itself is so easy to edit and share anybody can do it. This is one great little video camera and well worth the money to have one at your finger tips to catch those special moments.

Digital camera Review: Amazing machine
Summary: 4 Stars

Bit the bullet and bought this fairly impulsively after reading a few reviews and one endorsement from a colleague. What a great decision! Am amazed by the quality of the picture and the ease of function. Back to simplicity - Flip learned the Apple lesson. I always want to shoot movies of my two toddlers, but it's too much hassle to get the regular DVC camera, make sure it has a tape in, make sure it's charged, etc. etc. Then, it's so big relatively speaking, that it's too obvious to the kids, so they start focusing on the camera and stop doing whatever they're doing. So I end up not filming very much because by the time I get it set up, they're not doing whatever was so cute.

Enter Flip. This machine fits in your pocket and is easy to charge on a laptop (I have not bought the AC charger, but may do that soon) and you can just point and shoot immediately for beautiful HD quality film. I haven't downloaded anything yet, but I have no doubt it's a piece of cake. It also tells you how much time you have left, also very useful.
Only drawback is the near-absence of zoom (only x2, practically imperceptible). All in all, a fantastic product and only half the price, with twice the recording capacity (in HD!) of a regular DVC camera.

It's portable, it's cheap, it's good looking, it's incredibly light, it takes beautiful film, extremely easy to operate (truly idiot-proof), easy to download and charge - What's not to like??

I'm sure it will evolve and subsequent generations will only get better.
One slight downside: the USB plug forces you to dangle it from a USB connector on a computer - sometimes it can be supported, sometimes not - I worry about the weight of the camera (such as it is) all on the usb plug.
