Digital camera Review: A Surprising Improvement
Summary: 5 Stars
If you are having problems with headaches, dry eye, and/or eyestrain, and especially if they relate to long periods of time with a computer or TV screen, I strongly recommend you work with your eye doctor to treat the problem before it gets worse. I have been struggling with severe dry eye for almost a year now: 5 months of that has been using Restasis and steroid eye drops (Alrex) at the direction of my doctor. I knew a lot of it had to do with my work because I felt worse on the weekdays and my workplace is filled with fluorescent overhead lighting. After reading up on Gunnars, I found a local reseller and made an appointment to come in.
I fully expected to try them on, nothing would happen, and I'd thank them for their time. Instead, I could immediately tell a difference. I bought a pair and I keep them with me. I've been extremely pleased with what they've done for me: my eyes feel more relaxed when I'm using a computer (or flat-panel TV, or getting up-close with a backlit screen like my PSP). The yellow tint is very faint, and it's a price I'm willing to pay because the eye irritation had gotten pretty bad: I have to use a computer at least 40-50 hours a week and often more.
Do these glasses make you faster at gaming? I kind of doubt it. I can't see how they could improve response time except that after long periods in front of the computer you'll be less likely to struggle to focus.
Do Gunnars make you more productive at work? I'm not seeing that either--but I am less stressed after a long stint.
My Gunnars also do not appear to improve activities like driving at night (and you definitely want stronger eye protection when you're outdoors in the daytime). You don't want to wear them all the time: like reading glasses, you should just put these on as needed.
Do they otherwise help you to see better? Not really; I get the impression that someone without an eye problem is not likely to feel the difference as much...Gunnars seem to be more about feeling better than seeing better. Because of my own experiences, I have to suggest that anyone who has to work in front of a computer for long periods of time consider purchasing a pair as a future investment: with luck it will slow down the long-term effects that are now starting to hit me after decades of this. For people working in graphics/design where correct color balance is important, there are clear, untinted versions of Gunnars: I suggest you try them on before buying.
My eye doctor says that at the very least you want a lens that is anti-glare and anti-reflective. Where Gunnars take it a step further is the coatings and tint: there's something about this lens that simply reduces harshness and makes your eyes more comfortable.
