Digital camera reviews of Garmin Colorado 400t Handheld GPS Unit with U.S. Topographic Preloaded MapsDigital camera Review: Awesome gps Summary: 5 Stars
This is an awesome gps unit. Works very well. I even get a signal inside the house.
Digital camera Review: Awesome! Summary: 5 Stars
The maps are the most detailed yet and were very helpful on a recent hiking trip in the Great Smokey Mountains. The screen is very clear in direct sunlight. The roller interface is also easy to use, but not the best for entering POI searches. Turn-by-turn navigation is not avaiable with the included database. You will need to add the seperate upgrade to an SD card if you want this ability. However, once loaded this becomes an amazing all purpose device. Especially great to geocaching using the beta firmware. I expect to see even more improvements with future releases.
Digital camera Review: Best GPS I Ever Owned Summary: 5 Stars
This is an extremely cool GPS.
The screen is gorgeous. Big and sharp. The Topo 2008 maps look so cool with shading and 3-D.
The new control wheel really makes it easy to use. Far easier than any other Garmin unit.
It is well built, looks very cool and feels really good in your hand.
The recent firmware updates have solved most of the problems early buyers encountered when it first came out. I have no real complaints or problems that bother me.
I use it for hiking, biking, and driving. I put a 8GB SD card in and was able to load a lot of maps. I am really enjoying using it on my weekend explorations here in New Mexico.
I highly recommend it. Well worth the price.
Digital camera Review: Can only view one saved trail. Missing a lot of older features. Summary: 1 Stars
The older 60csx allowed you to view multiple saved trails at a time. This does not. The 60csx allowed you to modify the color and thickness of your track lines. This does not
So if you are going to a place that you have explored differently, with the 60csx you could see all of your prior tracks like a trail map. With the Colorado, you can only see one prior saved track. Its like looking at a map and only being able to see one road and no alternatives if you want to go a different way.
Also, while the color and thickness doesn't sound like much of an issue, the current tracks shows as a thin black line, which is similar to all of the other thin black lines on the map. The prior track is a huge thick line, much thicker than it needs to be. With the 60csx, you could adjust both.
Finally, there is no cover available to protect this product. There is a hard case, but most people want a cover that allows you to see the map whhile using the unit in less than perfect conditions. The 60csx had sone.
Accuracy is good, however if this product was not $500.00 and these items did not exist in prior versions, I would not care nearly as much.
Digital camera Review: Colorado 400T Summary: 3 Stars
The screen is easy to view, and I have gotten used to the wheel and the use of it to navigate through the options, but there are a couple of issues that I have run into that are frustrating. The maps, as loaded from the factory, seem to be off by several hundred yards. Not a problem in my front yard, perhaps, but a problem in the field certainly. A call to the people at Garmin was received rather coldly and unsympathetically - "the map is off but the unit is working properly" was the outcome. Well, fine that the unit is working, but it shows me in a different spot than where I am. Apparently, according to the gentleman I spoke with, this is Okay. The other problem is the power supply - It goes through batteries aggressivly...and in the field, for instance, for a week in Alaska there is no way to carry enough batteries to meet the power requirements for this little unit. Every once in a while, the unit seems to freeze up and the screen goes black with no ability to restart with the buttons, and the batteries have to be removed and reinserted, but that may be related to the power issue. Would I buy it again? It is a vast improvement over my old, and now defunct, Magellan unit, but I might look around a little more and try to get my hands on some of the other comparable units for a better comparison before committing to this unit.
