Digital camera reviews of Garmin Colorado 400t Handheld GPS Unit with U.S. Topographic Preloaded MapsDigital camera Review: Easy to use, accuracy an issue. Summary: 3 Stars
I found the unit to be fairly intuitive. I haven't read the manual and not having any problems using it, with one exception. I also have a problem navigating to a previously saved waypoint. It eventually gets you there, of course, but you waste time walking in smaller and smaller circles. I determined this by attempting to navigate to a known location. Watching the unit, I could see it was sending me off in the wrong direction.
Digital camera Review: Eats batteries! Summary: 4 Stars
Unit works well and the rock n roller wheel is handy. While elk hunting in Arizona I set a waypoint at the truck, then entered the forest. Tried to navigate back to the truck, but the unit was sending me in the wrong direction. I navigated back on my own and the unit said the truck was 5.3 miles to the northeast. All other attempts to navigate back to a waypoint worked well, just this once it was inaccurate. The only other issue is that it eats AA batteries like crazy. Will have to investigate rechargeable batteries to correct this issue.
Digital camera Review: Eclipse chasing - having trouble Summary: 3 Stars
I purchased the Colorado 400t to chase eclipses. I need to get to very specific places on earth and cannot be off target.
My primary trouble with this: I ran into problems loading in custom POI's. I have had the unit for a week now and I am trying to prepare it for my upcoming trip to Mongolia. I want to load in the eclipse track coordinates which I have saved in a .csv file. I used the Garmin software available on the Garmin site for loading in custom POI's. The first time I used it it worked great - for the first 30 coordinates or so. I think it ran out of space. I then used the same Garmin software to "delete all custom POI's", created a new .csv file with only the 14 coordinates that I needed, and tried to upload again. This is where the problem came in - although it tells me that the load was successful. when I go to the custom POI area on the unit there are "no matches found". I think something may have messed up the unit when I used their delete option. I am going to call Garmin directly later today because I have found no other reference to this problem online.
my second problem with this - the international maps are awful if you plan on going someplace unusual. I do not expect to get street names but something more than a blank peach colored field would be nice.
My third problem - no satelites can be found in my city! This is very strange as I am standing under an open sky. This makes me a little apprehensive - what if this happens to me in western mongolia?
Digital camera Review: Everything they said it would be and then some. Summary: 5 Stars
Plain and simple the best gps on the market. You can even customize the menu how you want it to be. You can throw the instructions in the trash as you will not be needing them. Buy the hard case off garmin's website with the money you saved buying this on amazon. Great unit!
Digital camera Review: Excellent Device, 4 Stars
This is an excellent tool for navigating. However, here are my complaints, and the reason that I returned it, and got the tried and true 60csx instead. It does come with pre-loaded topo maps, but there 100k which does'nt do much for you in the backcountry ( you really want 24k) which you have to buy seperately anyway. No big deal, there cheap enough now that it's not a problem. My biggest concern was that this model has been discontinued, and when you go to the update page, there's a warning that the update is not backed up by Garmin, (use at your own risk). They still can service this model, but for how long will they have all the parts? And I've heard that all the parts are the same, but, I'm not sure about that. My biggest concern, or dis-like is that the screen is not sun light readable. You have to use the backlight to really see anything cleary (unlike the 60 series) and it just did'nt feel very comfortable in the hand, a little bulky, and seemingly fragile. The 60 series, though lacking some of the goodies, is tried and true. It's the #1 Choice of everyone I know who really uses there GPS. Garmin just came out with a brand new edition of the 60 series with all the goodies, but I'll wait until they work out the bugs. For now, I'm sticking with this.
