Digital camera reviews of Garmin Edge Handle Bar Mount

Digital camera Review: Terrible mount for great bike computer
Summary: 1 Stars

I guess Garmin isn't reading reviews on Amazon or just doesn't care that they're making a piece of junk. If the only way to secure a very expensive computer to a bicycle is with a cheap piece of (overpriced) plastic, then the computer should at least come with a short tether, so it doesn't get lost when the plastic attachment unit inevitably breaks. If I didn't like everything else about the 705 so much, I'd advise against buying one, just for this reason.

Digital camera Review: The weak link in the system
Summary: 1 Stars

Just adding my one star review to the pile already here. The bracket is basically unsatisfactory. One solution is to stick "Dual-Lock" on the back of your unit and also on the top of your stem and hold the unit on that way. When cycling with the unit mounted to the bracket it is also wise to wrap a rubber band around the unit and the handlebars so that when the bracket fails, you won't lose the computer too.

Digital camera Review: Very Poorly Designed!
Summary: 1 Stars

I have now gone through FOUR of these Garmin Edge handlebar mounts. My Edge 705 flew off the bike on one of the mounts while riding down the road as the little tab suddenly broke during a cold weather ride. So I installed a second one that came with the 705. That one broke inside of 2 months. I had 2 more from my old 305, so I put another one on..that one broke, and I put the last one on yesterday, and it broke today. This is ridiculous. They all break at the same point, the small plastic tab that you push down to release the Edge from the mount, breaks. It's a very poor design as all the force is applied at the hingepoint of this tab, which is the weakest point in the design and subsequently breaks. And what is really bad, is that Garmin wants $13.50 for a replacement.

I called Garmin Support today about this and spoke to Steven at Customer Service. Told him the problem and he said that he'd had the same problem with his own 705 mount breaking at the same place. He said that Garmin had had some problems with early mounts and that they had come out with a new mount that was more rigid. But when I asked if I could send them 2 of the broken ones for a replacement, he backpedaled saying that the tab was still on the new mounts and that they had strengthened a different area that was causing a problem, not the tab (which still breaks). I said, so will you send me 2 new ones?? Nope...not for free. So I'm out, 4 of these poor mounts and if I want to put the Edge on any of my 3 bikes, then I need 3 of them...at a cost of $13.50 each plus shipping. The Garmin guy tells me "well it's a small plastic tab and if you put a lot of force pushing down on it, it's going to break cause it's plastic!!". I said, look, I've gone through 4 of them, after the first one, I thought the same thing, and now I barely push down on the release tab and it doesn't matter...the hinge of the tab is the weak point of the design and it's going to break. Then he says " you probably shouldn't use the Edge in cold weather, as plastic breaks in cold weather". Where do they get these people???

Kind of gives me a bad taste in my mouth for Garmin.

Digital camera Review: Very poor design
Summary: 1 Stars

I agree with the other one star ratings, except that one star is one too many. Unfortunately if you want to use your Edge on a bicycle, you have to have one of these. I have now broken three and I cannot figure out how not to break them. The tab that holds the unit in place is so fragile that a little bumping will break it off.

Bad job - Garmin. Fix it.

Digital camera Review: Warning: not compatible with Edge 500
Summary: 3 Stars

While item description simply says something along the lines of "extra bike mount for Edge GPS units", this bike mount is *not* compatible with Edge 500. For Edge 500, you'll need Quarter Turn Bike Mount (part number 010-11430-00). This bike mount and quarter turn mount are completely different and incompatible mounting systems. Note that Edge 500 comes with two bike mounts in the box (it doesn't say anywhere in the description or on the box, but I got two, and saw reports from other people that got two too), so if you only need two, you don't need to order extra one.

I gave it neutral three stars (it's required field), though I haven't actually used the item (I have Edge 500).
