Digital camera reviews of Garmin Etrex Legend GPS Receiver

Digital camera Review: DON'T BUY FOR GOING ACROSS COUNTRY
Summary: 1 Stars

Not big enough to store data, can take only 4 large cites!
It's a waste of money. First GPS we've owned. The joystick is a little tricky for new GPS and takes some getting used to.
Very sorry we bought it, first time GPS customers, if you want something for your car buy the bigger models and not the portables. We were trying to save a little dough and ended up with something we can't use.
Buyer beware and get your data before buying a GPS.

Digital camera Review: Decent GPS, connectivity is crippled
Summary: 3 Stars

I had this unit for about a week, and the GPS functionality worked great. My main complaint is the connectivity. It comes with an RS232 serial cable, which is ancient. If you want to use this with a Mac, or a PC without this connector, a $20 adapter is necessary. With that in mind, you might as well spend an extra $35 and get the eTrex Venture HC. It has a high sensitivity chip, USB connectivity, color screen, 3 x memory, geocaching mode, etc.

Garmin is brilliant in differentiating their products just enough that makes you want to spend $35 for the next model up. In my opinion, they purposely crippled the connectivity on this to make the more expensive model within reach. RS232 serial is ancient, and I don't believe it's any cheaper for Garmin to produce this unit with RS232 over the 12 year old standard mini USB connector. It's their prerogative to sell what they want at the price point of their choosing, but I would not recommend this unit. Pony up $35 more and get the Venture HC.

Digital camera Review: Didn't work well down the road.
Summary: 3 Stars

The built-in basemap is very handy. It makes this model much more useful than the basic eTrex.

This GPS works fine as long as it has a clear view of the sky. Once the built-in antenna is obstructed by *anything* such as a shirt or get mis-oriented by dangling vertically from one's neck, it can easily lose the signal.

The more expensive Legend Color has a better reception system, but you really pay for it.

If you don't mind either holding this flat or placing it properly so as to keep the signal, it is a good unit for a good price. If you have higher expectations for reception, you'll need to spend a couple hundred more to get the better antenna class.

I picked this one because it had a higher resolution screen than the Magellan models of the time.

This is also not the best GPS for driving, as the screen is too small to be read while on the move. It will do OK, but you'll find yourself looking down for too long. It is more suited to hiking and biking, and to keep on hand in the case that you get lost.

Sep. 26, 2009 update: I threw this in the garbage at a gas station a few weeks ago. Toward the end, it would only operate for 15 minutes or so, then it would glitch out, display a vertical line on the screen, and had to have the batteries removed and reinserted in order to work again. Piece of junk. Spend a few more bucks and get one of the newer color ones with the better receiver chip.

Digital camera Review: Display not what expected
Summary: 3 Stars

The GPS worked very well and amazingly fast, but I found the display harder to read than expected and hadn't realized that many small roads would not appear unless I bought additional software. It would be fine for hiking or boating but not great for auto travel. My choice would be to upgrade to one of the more expensive models with color displays instead of buying additional maps for this one.

Digital camera Review: Does everything it's supposed to...accurately
Summary: 5 Stars

Hello all,
I have to say that I am a little bit surprised at some of the negative comments I have seen about this device. I just got mine, and it does everything it's supposed to. The accuracy of my location is super, it can definitely be used while driving (but keep your eyes on the road while moving), it works great under tree cover, and features are fantastic. The Garmin Legend is easy to use and a great little gadget.
