Digital camera reviews of Garmin GPS 76CSX Handheld GPS with Barometric Altimeter and Electronic CompassDigital camera Review: Excellent Feature Rich GPS Summary: 5 Stars
I have been using my unit since April 2006. I bought it primarily for assistance while boating, so I could find my way back to the launch site. I like the fact that it is waterproof. Later, I purchased the chip for the Northeast Coastal waters including the Penobscot & Kennebec Rivers. It is accurate, reliable and very easy to use. It shows all the navigational bouys and hazards. We like to drop anchor and read, listen to some soft music and play Scrabble, and not have to worry about drifting. I just set the drift alarm at 10-20 feet and it notifies me if the anchor is not holding. On one trip to Moosehead Lake, it was quite windy and rough. My wife's cap blew off and before I could stop we had travelled several feet. I don't think we would have located her cap if I didn't have the bread crumbs to follow on my Garmin! We traced back and spotted it right away.
I also purchased the city navigator software for my laptop and transfer major areas (several states) to a blank chip that I swap out. I use it a lot when driving in my pick-up truck and it works just fine. I suppose I'd like to have a newer unit some day, for just driving, but this one will do for now.
And, I got the lakes chip that has the hazards for Moosehead Lake. The depths are shown for Sebago Lake and some of the more populated lakes, which is very useful.
Digital camera Review: Excellent piece of equipment Summary: 5 Stars
My etrex vista was nice and compact and worked fine at sea. But it was useless in the forest, just couldn't receive satellite signals, even in light tree cover.
I read about the new 'chip' in the newer models, and wanted a unit with an external antennae.
I got my map76csx and promptly took it on a serious hike. Performed better than I hoped for. It worked perfectly. I did use an external antennae from Gillson, and had multiple signals even in very heavy tree cover.
At home, I can take the unit outside and get the signal, then come inside (I live in the tropics in a concrete house) and still retain my signals.
BEST OF ALL..... my garmin was in a backpack along with other gear for an overnight camp, the backpack took a 230 foot fall to a rocky floor. The backpack was destroyed, my video camera, stainless steel coffe mug, tins of tuna and sardines were all mangled -literally- into balls of crumpled metal. Everything was completely destroyed....except my garmin!!
I was delighted and shocked that it came out unscathed and turned right on.
It's tougher than nails!
I highly recommend the unit.

Digital camera Review: Excellent product Summary: 5 Stars
This GPS is a bit big, but it is accurate and ez to use. Good value for the money. I would recommend this to anyone.
Digital camera Review: Excellent receiver, NMEA over USB w/Garmin Spanner software Summary: 2 Stars
I originally stated that there is no NMEA over USB. Actually there is -- it requires Garmin's free Spanner software to create a virtual COM port. Garmin phone support was unhelpful (and wrong), telling me you could not do it. About a week later I got an email from their email support guys that told me how to do it and where to download the necessary software. The unit is quite excellent.
Digital camera Review: Fantastic! Summary: 5 Stars
This product is very easy to use, intuitive buttons, easy menu, advanced programming and at the same time easy to be inserted.
simply fantastic.
