Digital camera reviews of Garmin GPS III Waterproof Hiking GPS

Digital camera Review: Large enough for dash, small enough for pack
Summary: 5 Stars

This unit is the perfect size for double duty as a dash board unit and hiking companion.

This is my third Garmin unit and first with a basemap. The base map makes it much more useful.

Cons:
Scrolling the base map can be time consuming. You will have to wait while map is loaded one screen full at a time. In a large city with lots of streets this can be frustrating. Editing routes is very tedious and usually requires resorting to manual to remember process.

Digital camera Review: More than just a gadget
Summary: 5 Stars

I did a lot of shopping around before I purchased my GPS III Plus, and I found it to be the most user friendly handheld GPS on the market. Its menus are easy to understand and after a few minutes of toying with the unit it becomes very easy to use. I use it for fishing, hunting, flying (only as a back up), hiking, and for off-road trails. The groundspeed and altimeter are interesting to keep an eye on during road trips. The US Topo CD really adds a lot of detail to the base map and is a great addition for fishing applications because it gives a more accurate depiction of the shoreline. Garmin regularly posts upgrades on their website for both the GPS and the Map Source CD's which are easily downloaded. Great Product and very easy to use. (I have stereo remote controls that are harder to use.)

Digital camera Review: My hunting and fishing guide
Summary: 5 Stars

I first received a G.P.S. for Christmas two years ago after getting lost in the woods. I used it everywhere, But it was only the GPSII plus. It was stollen 10 months ago and I was crushed. I recently perchased the GPSIII Plus and it's amazing. I can't wait to get a topo map to down load so I can use it hunting or fishing. It's a tool that should go along with all the assentials of hunting...ie; binocolars, gun &1st aid kit. I know that's the first thing I grab when getting ready to hike the hills.I would recommend it to everyone who likes the outdoors.

Digital camera Review: Never Get Lost Again!
Summary: 5 Stars

I first used this while vacationing in New Hampshire on Lake Winnipesauke. Since the lake is so big and everything looks the same when you are in the middle, the GPS was invaluable in telling me how to get back home. Plus the maps of the lake all have the coordinates of the buoys -- so you can punch them in and have an instant navigation aid.

On the downside, my unit seems to take a while to acquire a signal - usually longer still when in heavy brush/woods. However I realize this is a built-in limitation of GPS units as a hole.

Digital camera Review: Never be lost
Summary: 5 Stars

Carrying the Garmin GPS III+ is like having a map that always shows a 'You are here' arrow. I've used this in the car, while walking through the streets of Boston, and while hiking in dense forest in the mountains of New Hampshire. In all cases, this GPS device has proved extremely useful. I used to get lost ALL the time--it's no longer a concern for me.

Now, before I travel to a new location, I look up the address and enter the latitude and longitude into the GPS 3+. The device doesn't have routing capabilities built-in (it won't find the shortest driving route to a destination), but it does tell you what direction you need to go and how far away it is. For me, that's enough.

I've purchased the US Roads and Recreation CD, which allows you to download detailed road information to the GPS 3+. The maps are accurate, and the GPS device has enough memory to store the entire greater-Boston area (3 or 4 counties).
