Digital camera reviews of Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx Handheld GPS Navigator

Digital camera Review: 4 years later, it's a Garmin Hall of Fame
Summary: 5 Stars

I have this unit for about four years now. It has been used mostly for car navigation (N.America cities maps) and weekend hikes and trail MTB. Even though it's meant for outdoor activities, but it has kept me from being lost in major Japanese cities and rural areas (Japan map). What really surprised me is that how well it tracks Shanghai Maglev when it was traveling at its top speed at 271 miles per hour (youtube keyword:shanghai maglev garmin 60csx)

I'm being a geek and was thinking to replace it with newer model. But after a brief search on the net, apparently 60csx has a better screen than the newer models when viewing under the sun. Plus the new features on the newer models aren't that much different than 60csx. In some ways, 60csx is better than the newer models. I just need to upgrade the 2gb micro SD (paid $50 four years ago, now it's like $7 lol). Amazon's 550+ reviews with 4.5 stars is a true reflection of this Garmin Hall of Frame.

Digital camera Review: 4 years old and still high-end
Summary: 5 Stars

A lot of the reviews cover why this is such a great product, but let me point out 1 piece of evidence: Garmin didn't release a product that could completely obsolete it (GPSMAP 62) until 4 years after its introduction because it was selling and performing so well. How many elctronic devices can make that claim? Most are obsoleted in 6-12 months. In fact, REI still sells this, although the price has finally dropped below $300.

Digital camera Review: 4.5 Great handheld...just a few issues
Summary: 4 Stars

Just purchased this unit and am getting used to its features and quirks. I researched handhelds for a month before deciding on this unit and all of the features for which I chose it are present. That said....my only issues are that Garmin should be ashamed of the paltry base maps included with the unit. Yea, I know that the idea is to sell you more products, but don't even imagine that you can use the maps that come with the unit. Plan on forking out some more cash. The other issue is that you may as well plan on figuring out how to use the thing on your own as the product guide and the MapSource software help leave a lot to be desired. The process for registering and unlocking the maps involved two calls to Garmin support. They were great and answered incidental software and use questions while attempting to correct the unlocking problem.

Digital camera Review: 5 star performer
Summary: 5 Stars

Got this little dandy for Christmas from my wife. Since then I have taken it to the Bahamas and back. You will need to buy the detailed maps. The digital card should be upgraded to at least 1GB. I can store almost half of the US in detail on 1GB. Works great for auto routing. Even my wife got interested when it adjusted to my driving off the preset route. It recalcs and jumps right back in with directions again!!! It has so many good points I would rather tell you to read the product description. The only possible detractor is the initial slow satelite acquisition. Not a real problem though.

Digital camera Review: 60CSx acuracy problems
Summary: 2 Stars

I would not trust the 60CSx while hiking!

Both of my 60CSx units were initially within Garmin's +/- 45 ft accuracy specification. After just one week of daily usage the first 60CSx lost sensitivity and could not lock on to more than 4 satellites. Position errors were typically +/- 200 ft as viewed on the Satellite page. This error would also show as erratic tracks when viewed on the Map page. Using the WAAS feature did not improve its performance. Large Trip Computer errors would build up when the unit was stationary.

The replacement 60CSx held to Garmin's +/- 45 accuracy for 7 weeks. It could decode and track 8 to 10 satellites. Suddenly, position accuracy degraded to over +/- 200 ft. This unit could lock on to 6 satellites. The WAAS feature did not improve accuracy or reduce display noise. When held in one position in my back yard for 1.26 hours in Tigard, Oregon the Trip computer showed the following drift: 1.34 miles, 23 minutes of moving time, maximum speed 7.7 mph, moving average speed 3.7 mph. These errors occurred when the 60CSx is motionless!

A similar drift test with motionless a Garmin eTrex and Lowrances' iFinder units did not show any significant drift.

In conclusion, the 60CSx cannot be trusted for hiking.
