Digital camera reviews of Garmin GPSmap 478 GPS ReceiverDigital camera Review: SHARP PIX EVEN IN SUN Summary: 5 Stars
The crossover marine vs land is a great feature.....screen clear even in bright sun......programs easily (with a little practice).....first time Garmin users may need to read the manual......but don't admit it....very happy with this unit
Digital camera Review: Ship to Shore Summary: 5 Stars
Yes, all products have a learning curve and the Garmin GPSMap 478 is no exception. This said, the 478 is a very useful tool in any environment. It will guide you to roadway destinations with precision and charm (using the voice feature) and plot a course through nationwide costal cruising. Add on features expand its use to enhanced weather data, depth sounding, fish finding, satellite radio and more. I have only had the unit for a short time and already see it as a great asset in the car and essential on the boat. Coastal cruising here I come!
Digital camera Review: The added "Lakes" chip Summary: 4 Stars
The 478 is perfect for roads and coastal waters. However, the chip available for additional information regarding inland lakes does not include the Army Corps of Engineers flood control lakes in the Northern PA area.
Digital camera Review: The swiss army knife of GPS's Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased this device because I wanted a gps that does well both on the water and on the road. I have been very impressed with it so far. The preloaded water charts have nearly as much depth detail as a paper chart. The display is also very bright and easy to read. Even though I purchased it as more of a backup, I find myself looking at it more than the older built in one on the boat, since the maps and display are so nice.
On the road it works just as well as a decent Automotive model. In my car the beanbag mount sits pretty securely on the dash and has been better for me than the usual suction cup mount. It does not have a touch screen, so it does take a little longer to enter in an address, but that is really the only downside I have come across.
Overall, I would strongly recommend this device to anyone that is looking for a gps that is equally at home on the water or on the road. I was originally considering a handheld like the Colorado, but am glad I came across this device because of its versatility easier to read screen.
Amazon had the best price and shipped it to me in just a few days with the super saver free shipping.
Digital camera Review: What a great product. Summary: 5 Stars
I love this GPS.
The Con's are, it would be great to include inland lakes and ocean on one GPS, did garmin ever think that someone may actually want to take their boat on both or is this a ploy to make you purchase memory and an additional CD. The second downside is the menu's can be confusing and if you are at sea and dont remember what keys to push and are constantly going back to the quickstart guide it become irritating. This issue may not be relevant if you are a prior garmin user or once you have used it for a while and get used to the menus.
The Pro's are numerous, for such a small screen it is incredibly bright and easy to read. The detail is extremly good. The battery life is at least 4 to 6 hours if you dim it down.
Overall a good product.
