This is one of those things that you must purchase if you want to use the available features on your Garmin GPS. Shop around for the best price, that's all I can advise. FOLLOW-UP: Jan 2009 I later learned that this is in fact THE xm radio...not simply an XM antenna for the Garmin Zumo 550. Knowing that made more sense as to why it has an expensive price tag. I use it all the time in the car and on my motorcycle and I LOVE XM radio and the traffic alert and weather alert capabilities. Only thing missing is video!

GXM 30 XM smart antenna delivers XM Satellite Radio, NavTraffic and Weather services to your compatible Garmin. Roughly 3 inches in diameter, the GXM 30 processes all XM information and sends the finished data to your unit for display. The GXM 30 requires a XM Satellite subscription(s). Traffic services are available only in select cities where XM Nav Traffic coverage exists.The compact, all-in-one GXM 30 delivers XM satellite weather, traffic, and radio to your compatible Garmin GPS navigator. With the GXM 30 and a subscription to one of XM's satellite services, you can check the weather, avoid traffic backups, or listen to commercial-free radio while driving with your navigator in tow. Setting up the GXM 30 is quick and easy: simply position the antenna where it has a clear view of the sky and connect it directly to the USB port on your GPS receiver. Once you've chosen the XM subscription that best fits your needs, you'll start receiving XM satellite services immediately.
The type of information you receive depends on your subscription package. XM NavTraffic notifies you of accidents, road construction, and weather-related traffic delays before you encounter them, and then offers an alternate route on your GPS. XM WX Weather, meanwhile, brings real-time animated weather data directly to your screen, letting you steer clear of bad weather or choose a less snowy mountain pass, for instance. Finally, XM satellite radio offers dozens of commercial-free music, talk, sports, and news stations--one for virtually every genre in existence. The GXM 30, which measures roughly 3 inches in diameter, fits the following Garmin navigators: the GPSMap 376C, GPSMap 378, GPSMap 478, GVN 52, StreetPilot 2820, StreetPilot 7200, StreetPilot 7500, StreetPilot 2730, and zumo 550. It's also backed by a one-year warranty.
