Digital camera Review: Do Not Buy Garmin Map Updates

Garmin is still the leader in car GPS devices in the US. I own two units, a Street Pilot 2820 fixed in my car, and a Nuvi 680 which I take with me on my frequent business trips. I bought the 2008 updates but could see no difference. None of the new roads in my area had been added and the mistakes I've noticed (mislabeled roads, illegal turns) have not been fixed. I was only allowed to update one unit with the CD, even though both units are registered with My Garmin. I became really angry when my Street Pilot was stolen, and even though I reported the unit and serial number stolen to Garmin to prevent the thieves trying to update it, Garmin still would not let me install the Maps on my Nuvi! So the thieves have both my GPS and Garmin is letting them keep my $60 map updates.
I will not be replacing my GPS with a new Garmin as I had hoped. With this kind of customer service I'm going to wait for something better to come along. Garmin still make the best hardware, but the software is becoming a real let down.

The upgrade probably adds roads not there in previous versions but I can't tell personally. Also, my route to work was changed with the upgrade. It told me to get off a certain exit and go south on the freeway - never mind the specifics; suffice it to say that it changed the route such that it was 5 minutes longer. Who knows how this happens as obviously the algorithms are not transparent.
Also, the points of interest are 2 years old, so any new restaurants are not going to be listed.
SO my take is that you could probably wait a few versions and that it is likely not necessary to upgrade every time thay come out with a new version since there are no noticeable differences. It's not like you can go to their web site and have them spell out exactly what they have added - god forbid.

Price was excellent. Product??? After 3 years I thought an update might be useful. Previous software sometimes led to very inefficient and confusing routings (although it would eventually get you to the destination), especially in urban areas and near reconfigured interstate interchanges. However, with the new software, on a recent trip: in one instance, at a right or left turn, it told me to turn the wrong way from which it would have been impossible to get to the destination w/o doubling back; in another instance, I was at my destination and software said I had 17 miles to go to get there!
Pretty disappointing.

I have a Garmin GPS. We travel all over the Country and don't know where we are going most of the time. My husband does not like to listen to it but when we are lost, I turn it on, find where we are and how to get to where we are going. The downside is, it does not always take you the fastest way if you know where you are going. I use it when I drive because I get where I am gong every time. (It may take a little longer but I get there). I like the fact that it tells me ahead of time that a turn is comming up so I can be prepare to get in the right lane. I am very comfortable to drive anywhere and know I won't get lost.Digital camera Review: Don't waste your money

I wish had not wasted my money on these new maps. The first location I entered turned out to be incorrect. Our own street, which was extended a few years ago, is still not shown correctly on the map. I thought these maps were supposed to be current as of April, but that cannot possibly be the case. My advice: wait for another version!
