Digital camera reviews of Garmin MapSource 2008 Topographical U.S. Map DVD-RomDigital camera Review: Average mapping software Summary: 3 Stars
I'd say the Topo is average. I've used others - DeLorme, etc... This is about the same. One issue I had was it's accuracy. While using it, I found that all the roads are shifted slightly to the North or South on the map compared to where they actually are. Not a giant problem - as it is only max 100 yards. But if you are in deep timber - it could mislead you some. Not sure what's the problem - but on my GPS MAP 60 csx - it is consistently this way. The detail is just average. There are better maps out there - but none that are compatible with the GPSMAP60. Also, they need more areas in their Parks version so we can get better detail of bigger areas. Additionally, you cannot use TOPO while using City Navigator in the same area. You have to manually switch back and forth depending on if you want to navigate via the roads on City Navigator - or if you are off the beaten path and need Topo information. That's a pain. Overall, your choices are limited and for the greatest US coverage, this is your choice for TOPO with the Garmin units. It did suprisingly have some old skid trails already in it - which was a suprise! I liked that.
Digital camera Review: Awesome map software Summary: 5 Stars
This software is great! Complete maps of the US. Has all the little wierd side streets that you didn't know were there. Great buy, I use it all the time.
Digital camera Review: Best of Mapsource Summary: 5 Stars
Topo 2008 seems to combine the discontinued Topo and the current Roads and Recreation software, plus it adds many other features like 911 addresses. Another advantage to the DVD installation is that you do not need to use the DVD when running the program. Great stuff!
Digital camera Review: Better than expected- but lots of data for small screen Summary: 5 Stars
From the reviews, I was prepared that this might be an inferior product. But, to my pleasant surprise it works great. The scale is obviously not what you would get on a quad map but that would be a waste on a small screen gps. The software that loads onto the main computer works wonderfully and has some very interesting locations on it that are not shown on other maps. Local historians are using some of the data now doing research on some sites. If my gps had an 11" screen, I would like to have 1:24000 scale quads, but for the gps, this is great! Got a great price on it also.
Digital camera Review: Better than nothing, but not by much. Summary: 3 Stars
Highlight: The actual Mapsource program, for transferring maps to your handheld Garmin. Lowlight: The actual TOPO map included on the DVD. For my area, it has some kind of datum error, off by almost .1 mile. Contours seem OK, placement of POI not so much. Found a much better Colorado topo map on the Web.
