Digital camera reviews of Garmin MapSource City Navigator, North America DVD-ROM for Garmin StreetPilot GPS Units

Digital camera Review: 2008 city navigator
Summary: 4 Stars

Lots of info on the dvd. Takes a while to load but info is right on target. Resturants to hotels to highway exits right on target. Using in a Garmin 60CSX. Previously purchased Topo 2008 which is awesome. No way one can get lost. Used mine in Colorado for big game hunting.

Digital camera Review: 6k miles, 1 month, make sure to turn off dirt road routing!
Summary: 3 Stars

I went 6k miles with a pop up camper and it worked flawlessly. Got me everywhere I wanted to go. Only catch is onetime it took me down a 4x4 only road and I was towing almost 3k lbs. Um... 6 miles 40 minutes. My fault for blindly trusting and not turning avoid unpaved roads. I admit there are some areas that are not mapped properly, but overall it is a good software. I did have issues installing it, but with a 5 minute phonecall to garmin, they resolved it quickly. I think that Garmin charges too much for the software then doesn't provide updates often enough, but I guess they need to make a profit too. I too had to upgrade to a CSx to get a 2 gig card in my gps so I could go cross county, but it was worth every penny. No more "Um where are we?" or "Did we miss our exit, oh crud, now where do we turn". It has kept me in line for far too many miles.

The installation issues, the cost, the unmapped areas, and the map size are most of the reasons I didn't give this a 5 star. It's worth the cost, but there are a few things to tolerate.

Digital camera Review: ? A little glitchy for modern GPS software
Summary: 3 Stars

It has all the points of interest that I am looking for and the maps are very detailed but the mapping software has some rather annoying glitches when it comes to entering addresses. You almost have to trick it with certain addresses to get them to show up while creating a route.

Digital camera Review: A must for any Garmin GPS
Summary: 4 Stars

A GPS without map software is like a computer with no operating system. City Navigator definitely makes life easier and if you get the 2GB microSD (transflash) memory card, you can load the entire DVD of North American maps (about 1.6GB).

I was a little surprised, however, that even with the new version 8 I'm finding several innacuracies (roads and POIs). I realize that old roads are changed and new roads are built and businesses come and go. But Garmin charges about $130 for the City Nav NA v8 and about $100 for the upgrade. I just think that for as much money as you spend on the unit, case, power adapter, mounts, memory card and the maps, you should at least be able to get updates free for a period of time.

In my mind, that is equivalent to a motherboard manufacturer providing firmware updates for a couple of years. Anyway, the cost of maintaining current maps and innacuracies are why I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars.

Digital camera Review: All the problems due to user error
Summary: 5 Stars

I was originally dreading the install of this software after reading many of the reviews on this website. To my surprise the install went without a hitch and I had it installed and working in MapSource on my computer within 10 minutes. To the people who didn't realize there was a code needed "inside" the packaging.... did you not notice the warning on the FRONT of the package saying there was a necessary code INSIDE? Also, I didn't hook my Vista HCx up to the computer until after the installer asked me to, and there were no problems detecting it. Learn how to use a computer people! In regard to people complaining about the account registration on Garmin's website - its not Garmin's fault that you failed to register your GPSr product. Paying this much money for 1.5gb of data on a 50 cent DVD, it makes me feel better that some other kid downloading illegal software won't be using my serial number to activate this program.

The software functions exactly as expected and after looking back, the GPS is really "full-featured" now compaired to the utterly crappy basemaps that were stock. I give this 5 out of 5 stars because I'm using this on a handheld HCx unit I take hiking and biking, and for less money (than the cost of the GPS + software) you can find a Tom Tom or another unit with a much larger screen if all you care about is driving in your car with this.
