Digital camera reviews of Garmin eTrex H Handheld GPS NavigatorDigital camera Review: A Great Basic GPSr (with one caveat) Summary: 4 Stars
I really like this GPSr. It is a good, affordable GPSr with one reservation, but first the good points. It is small and light, easy to carry in a pocket or on the supplied lanyard. The display is crisp and bright, easy to read. The device locks onto satellites quickly and has good accuracy, even in rain or under heavy tree cover. It uses two AA batteries and gets 16+ hours of heavy use per pair.
This GPSr does not support any form of map -- it is a minimalist's GPSr. It does not include an interface cable and has a proprietary connector. If you do not want to enter each waypoint manually, you will need to buy a USB-Serial cable (unless your computer is old enough to have a serial port). These are readily available on eBay. I use the Tracks feature to log my hikes and mountain bike rides into Topo! mapping software for later review and annotation, and it works seamlessly.
The only caveat is this. This is an older model of GPS, and if it will be used for geocaching the user should understand that it can only hold a 6-character waypoint name. So, if you are downloading loc/gpx files, realize that the waypoint names have expanded to 7-characters and so the last character will be clipped from the eTrex. For example, waypoints GC12345 and GC12347 will both reduce to GC1234. This means if you try to load both these waypoints into the GPSr, you will only keep the second waypoint, as the it will overwrite the previous waypoint. There are readily available shareware and freeware programs to work around this issue.
So, if you do not mind a little extra effort when loading multiple waypoints, or pocket-queries, and do not require maps, this GPSr is a solid performer and a great value. I took one star for the 6-character limitation.
