Digital camera reviews of Garmin eTrex Venture HC GPS ReceiverDigital camera Review: Better Reception with the eTrex Venture HC Summary: 5 Stars
I was very pleased with the purchase of my new eTrex Venture HC. I've used a Garmin Legeng Cx for geocaching for the last year and coords jump off too much under heavy canopy. This is not the case with the new eTrex Venture HC. I was also able to load Topo and City maps without any trouble using my old software. I also had no problems loading waypoints directly using GSAK software.
Digital camera Review: Bought for Geocaching Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this GPS to do geocaching with the family. It's easy to use and it's a lot more accurate then what we were using before. On the first outing one afternoon we found 11 geocaches with very little problem. I wish now I have the Electronic Compass, but you have to ask is that feature worth the extra money? For most people I believe this GPS will do a good job.
Digital camera Review: Buyer Beware Summary: 3 Stars
This device has a very short learning curve. The main issue I have is the so called "Detailed base map." Unless you are planning on hiking up and down major road ways (which at that point you could use street signs!) the base map is pretty much useless. With out a detailed map you are better off buying a $5.00 compass and a $2.00 step counter. I was very surprised after spending what I did for the device I had to turn around and spend another $116 (Garmin's list price) for the Topo US 100K map dvd. Also given the limited memory and no expansion slot, I was only able to fit about 16 maps before I used more than half of the available memory. The 100k map is also a little difficult to use because in order to zoom in enough for map details you lose the big picture fast. I also cannot find a 24k map pack for the Southeast region so keep this in mind as well. And the goto feature once you enter a waypoint (or geocache site) is the way the crow flies. I strongly recomend against this device for anyone serious about using it on the trail. I would have traded off the extra crap like the calculator, games, and calendar for a map!
Digital camera Review: Cannot accept maps Summary: 1 Stars
This looked like the perfect unit for what I was looking for. Even called Garmin about downloading street maps and the rep assured me that while you can't download the whole North America collections you can certainly download for a state. WRONG! Purchased the map CD and guess what, because this only has 24Mb it cannot fit many of the sections (note not even states but sections of a state). I pointed out that on the Garmin web site it specifically shows compatible software which includes the NA street map. I also pointed out that nowhere does it indicate the file size of the sections of the maps (ie won't fit in this unit). No explanation. I have several Garmin products but I have to admit this experience was lame. I now need to buy the unit that will accept a memory card. Good be what you're looking for but do a lot of homework first.
Digital camera Review: Cheap device - expensive price Summary: 2 Stars
Well, this item is pretty typical of a bottom end electronic gadget these days. Extremely user hostile without the slightest attention paid to the interface or usability. Yes it is a GPS, and yes it can tell you your coordinates from satellite signals. But thats as far as it goes. First off you cant see the display unless its lit which you have to set each time you turn it on (by memory since you cant navigate to the setting because its dark!) Then you need the thick manual to find out how to navigate all the screens to get at what you need. Put simply - this is a cludgey $10.00 digital gadget, that like cell phones, is WAY overpriced for the quality you receive. BTW - you have to buy maps separate - how cheezy is that.
