I purchased this item in hopes of using it on my bicycle to travel down many different country roads in my area. The explanations for what this unit does were not clear and the unit did not live up to my expectations. It comes with a base map that tells you basically that you are in North America. I already know this and wanted more detail so I ordered the Maps on DVD recommended by Garmin. These cost an extra $100. I recieved them and found I wasn't able to put them on my unit because it doesn't have enough internal memory. Of course Garmin never mentioned this.I finally called the manufacturer who told me that the unit just doesn't do what I want it to do, mainly, show me detailed road maps for when I bike around my area. I don't know if I can return this useless item but I'm going to try. I'll never buy any Garmin product again.Digital camera Review: Does a very nice job for the money!

We got this at Christmas to try geocaching. So far we love the sport and are very pleased with this gps receiver. It is not perfect, I would not want to deal with moderate or heavy tree cover, you definitely have to find "open" areas on your trail, but for geocaching it has certainly gotten us to over 30 of them already in only 3 weeks. We have been pretty much on or close to the mark every time as we have no trouble finding them. I love the geocaching function on it, Garmin models work with geocaching.com and the website will write it directly to the gps for you and we have done multiple caches in a day and it will pop up with the next closest one for you automatically.It has alot of bells and whistles that I haven't even begun to play with, but so far it has been excellent both at navigating and is fairly intuitive for getting through the menus and such. I'm not much for instruction books and I've done okay wtih it but I know there is so much more I could do with it when I get through the instructions. We are very pleased, I'm sure you could do better, but you will pay 3 or 4 times as much for it. If you are looking for something to do some basic things with and most especially geocaching, then I recommend this one!! In fact, we like it so much we are now looking for a second Garmin for my husband to take on business trips!Digital camera Review: Don't expect good field mapping.

I am very satisfied with my purchase of the Garmin eTrex Venture HC Handheld GPS. It is as accurate as I had hoped it would be. My only complaint would be that the internal map is of very poor quality, though it is still not a deal breaker for me. One example I have is: The area I hunt is next to a lake, the GPS shows water everywhere I am hunting, even though I am actually more than two hundred yards away and over 15 feet in elevation above the actual lake at normal water level. It would be less disorienting to have a more acurate though not detailed map. Since the detailed topo map is suppossed to be much more accurate, Garmin could have simply removed all detail from the topo map and loaded it onto the unit. It would only cause me to be less skeptical of buying the additional topo map.Digital camera Review: Durability problems

I've owned three of these for geocaching, and it's ok for that purpose. However I had the place where the strap attached break once so they replaced it. Eventually the glue holding the rubber outside wore off and started oozing out and the rubber started moving around. So I threw it away. After having the screen crack on a more advanced model, I went back to this one and less than two years ago the glue is oozing out again and the rubber is slipping. I am going to have to try a different brand name, the Garmin models haven't rugged enough for my use.Digital camera Review: Easy to use.

This is a good product for the price. There are more expensive GPSs out there, but the HC will get you there and back.
