Digital camera reviews of Garmin eTrex Vista C Color Handheld GPSDigital camera Review: Fun and Practical Summary: 5 StarsI find computers easy to understand so this may not apply to everyone, but this GPS was easy to figure out and use. I really like the ability to interface the unit with the computer via the software. I've had some fun pulling the LL coordinates off the Google maps site (from the page properties) and plugging them into the tool.
Digital camera Review: Excellent! Summary: 5 StarsI have had the previous model, the eTrex Vista (so not the Vista-C) and the only thing I really missed was the routing feature. And that works just great with the eTrex Vista-C.
Love the screen, very clear.
Nice little "extras" included as well (functionailty wise).
Little suprise: the eTrex Vista-C is a little shorter and a little wider than the older eTrex models. Later I found this to be an advantage; seeing the routing is much clearer to read (more space).
Initially I read reviews of people complaining that the Vista-C did work with theirPC GPS software (iGuidance, DeLorme, etc). Well that is not entirely true; you do however need a little piece of software to get it going. It's called GPSGate from http://franson.com/gpsgate/ ($14 if I'm right). And it works.
One downside though: the maps (Garmin MapSource) are SOOOO expensive. At least the US should have been included.
Digital camera Review: Start up and walk (drive) away) Summary: 5 StarsI liked the unit from the first time picked it up. It is MUCH faster in start up and lower in power draw (longer battery life) than the last two units I have used (one of them an older Garmin product!). I literlally put the batteries in and turned it on and used it with only a few references to the quick users guide. The controls ate very intuitive and the online support excellent.
I reccomend it highly.
Digital camera Review: Excellent device Summary: 5 StarsI'm very happy with the device. I really appreciate the integrated electronic compass. The integrated altimeter seems to need a lot of calibrating, though. The altitude reading from GPS seems to be more accurate most of the time. Battery life is not great, especially when satellite signals are weak or you use the backlight a lot. However, it's everything I want with lots of interesting features I didn't expect.
Digital camera Review: Great Little Handheld Summary: 5 StarsThis is my first GPS receiver. While I am electronically savvy, I'm new to GPS. So far I've been very pleased with the Vista C's quality, and performance. The color screen is very nice and works surprizingly well in direct sunlight. It seems to lock on to satellites and WAAS quickly from my Maryland location. The barometer is very cool, as is the electronic compass. I've really enjoyed the trip computer feature, especially after mounting the unit on my bicycle. I haven't downloaded any maps yet, but I suspect it will work just great too. I do wish the owners manual had more detail and provided better information about the menu items, beyond just how to use them, but also why would you select one option over another.
