Digital camera reviews of Garmin eTrex Vista C Waterproof Hiking GPS

Digital camera Review: Nice Upgrade from last etrex
Summary: 5 Stars

Etrex Vista keeps rulling on GPS units as the most user frendly and best cost benefit in the market! My previous model endured in the harsh tropical forest of Brazil pretty well, and I was even able to sell it before upgrading to this new one, with color screen and other additional nice features such as extended memory and USB communication ports.

Digital camera Review: Nice portable gps
Summary: 5 Stars

As far as handheld gps' go, this one has got it all. Very easy to use and lots of features. Im still using this one 2 years later.

Digital camera Review: Perfection*****
Summary: 5 Stars

I've used a GPS 72, Legend, Vista and now the Vista C. This is by far the best unit I've used. I love the color screen more than I thought I would and the USB cable transfers data very quickly if you want to load maps or a lot of waypoints.

Digital camera Review: Poor reception and maps
Summary: 2 Stars

I just bought the eTrex Vista C for a NH White Mountains hiking trip. All in all, it was a disappointment. The hike itself was in moderately tree'd areas ranging from 1,600 up to 4,000 ft elevation. It must have lost reception 40 times over a 16 mile hike. In addition, the trials marked on the Garmin topo maps were very inaccurate, sometimes as much as 400 feet off from where I was actually hiking. I called the store where I bought the device and they claimed that was not unusual (after we spent 10 minutes verifying the device was set correctly). It was a sunny and clear two days, so fortunately I didn't need the device to help find or locate a trail. Finally, the battery life was much less than the advertised 20 hours: I'd say more like 15-16 (I guess actual mileage will vary).

Digital camera Review: Powerful little GPS
Summary: 5 Stars

I upgraded from an Etrex Legend to a the Vista Color and I'm so glad I did. The color map is much easier to read, Battery life is longer and loads more features.
I bought City Select for it so it can do the auto routing and it works great. I find that the 24mb fits most of western PA and the edges of the bordering states. Even though the screen is small, with the Garmin windshield suction mount it's it's easy to see with the back light on. It has tones to alert you when a turns is approaching when using auto route. Operating while driving is next to impossible. Set it up before you leave your parking spot, pull over or wait until you are at a stop light. I like the size of the unit, because I can carry it everywhere. I've had mine a couple of months and it's has been very handy, even for looking up phone numbers of local places.
The altimeter and compass are extras that I didn't miss on the legend, but I have grown fond of them on the Vista Color.

City Select software really enhances the value of these Garmin units.
