Digital camera reviews of Garmin nüvi 260 3.5-Inch Portable GPS NavigatorDigital camera Review: Comparison with Other GPSs Summary: 5 Stars
I am a gadget geek and own 6 GPSs. This latest Nuvi series is the best I have found if you simply want to get to your destination, and want user friendlyness. I think it is a bit better in this respect than the Tom Tom. I also have a Lowrance 500c. The Lowrance is big, heavy, runs hot [will trip off in hot sun], touch screen does not work as well, no battery, & is not near as user friendly. The Nuvi is easier to use-it is so intuitive that you dont need the user manual. The Nuvi turns itself on and off automotically, adjusts to day and night screens automtically. Also you neeed a battery, - so you can take it to a PC easily and program locations in for a long vacation. Also the unit finds satellites quicker than the lowrance, and in sub zero temps, it reponds to startup and touch screen prompts via your finger just like it would in warm weather. The others are not near as good as this. Also make sure you buy a dash mounted, four legged 'bean bag' mount by Garmin. Forget the suction cup on the windshield approach, also illegal in CA & MN. Trust me on this point, the suction cup does not work well long term. I own Three Nuvi's [one for Son] the Europe maps on the 270 model are great, and will save you on that EU vacation. Also have your favorite destinations preprogrammed, and forget the rental car unit, especially in the EU, you never know IF and what the rental people will give you, and can be a GPS that speaks French or Italian and fights reprogramming. The one feature to be aware of is Voice pronuciation of the upcoming street name ['turn left' vs. 'turn left on Oak St.] some Nuvi models have it, some don't. But the street is written on the screen for all models. This is a nice feature but you pay more.
Digital camera Review: Couldn't be happier! Summary: 5 Stars
Got my nuvi 260 this afternoon. It's my first GPS so I have nothing to compare it to but after taking it on it's maiden voyage, I could not be happier.
I was concerned before purchase because I read that it sometimes took many minutes to acquire the satellite for a strong signal. However when I turned mine on, it seemed like i had signal almost immediately!
Then, having punched in a destination, I found it to be uncannily accurate. It wanted me to go a different way, but when I took the streets that I preferred, it recalculated the new route within seconds.
The display is very bright and the spoken directions were perfect.
I am not yet up to finding stores in other cities so I had a little trouble. I tried to search for Lowe's Hardware in the next town but it would only give me stores in my town. So i entered Home Depot and it only gave me a choice of one, rather than showing me the three that are around me.
I'm sure it is due to my learning curve as a new user. I fully expect that it will all be old hat within a week.
Also, because of the newness, I found myself looking at the screen and not the road more often than I should.
All in all, I love this little unit.
Digital camera Review: Customer service Summary: 5 Stars
I think most other reviewers have covered all of the qualities of the Garmin 260. I just want to give a special shout out to their customer service.
Last Christmas I got one of these for my parents. Garmin allows you one free map update, which is really nice so you don't have to worry about when the unit was produced.
After updating unit's operating system and maps, it lost the TTS voice files. These are the voices that will give you the names of the streets and not just the direction to turn.
I called Garmin's support number and, get ready for this, a PERSON answered. I was so shocked because I expected a computerized menu system that I had to ask her if I dialed the right number. She connected me to a tech support person right away and he walked me through the process to get the files back on the unit. He was knowledgeable about the updating process, even on a Macintosh.
Digital camera Review: Decent GPS Summary: 4 Stars
I purchased this as an upgraded version from the one I had been using at my previous job. I don't care about the picture stuff, so I can't speak to that. But I thought the TTS option would be nice. It is nice to hear the actual street names. However, I would like more instructions to speed me through some of the options instead of hitting buttons, and then hoping that I remember the right sequence when I get to the option I was looking for. Also, my last (lower version) model automatically went to the map if I didn't hit anything which was nice...just start the car and go. This version requires you to hit "Where to" or "View map", which is not a big deal, but I am used to not having to hit anything, so I will look down, and will still be on the start screen. Overall, a nice GPS, relatively user friendly, and good screen size.
Digital camera Review: Defective out of box?? Summary: 1 Stars
I started using this Garmin 260 Nuvi right after I received it and since I have not used any GPS before I got really confused that why in the world this thing is showing a destination path through the apartment complex???
It basically created a path that did not exist and I wonder what would have happened if I had followed the path?? Probabley would have damaged few homes and injured few ppl.In the course of finding the destination there was no voice suggesting any directions either.I really hope this is the only one of the kind as I really dont want any one to get injured.
Othrwise QA department from Garmin should be sent home.
