Digital camera reviews of Garmin nüvi 260W 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator

Digital camera Review: A reliable GPS does the navigation job right
Summary: 5 Stars

Just few days before a family trip, I purchased this GPS to save me some time on map reading and trip planning (navigating to the next "point of interest" efficiently). I was considering TomTom ONE XL-S 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator initially, but switched to Garmin 260W after hearing positive comments on Garmin GPS products from co-workers. This GPS provides 2 major features I was looking for - the 4.3-inch screen and spoken-street-names. They are the 2 features that matter most to me when driving. Others (FM transmitter, MP3, MSN-enhanced server) are nice-to-have but may provide less value to a casual GSP user like me, who does not need GPS in everyday driving, but only in some weekend, out-of-town trips.

It is my first GPS. My family was amazed by its quick response and accuracy in navigation. My wife was happy to enjoy a more rural and scenic route 260W suggested, and stay most of our trip off highway. To me, simply selecting the saved locations and pressing "Go" to reach them makes my family trip less stressful on the road.

The only disadvantage I see in this unit is the battery life. It does not last long after a full charge. I was hoping to use it throughout a 3-4 hours drive without bothering the power cable.

Overall, I am very happy with Garmin nuvi 260W. It's reliable, intuitive in operation and offering good value at a reasonable price!

Digital camera Review: A very good one, but with some flaws
Summary: 4 Stars

My wife and I like the quick satlite search and recalculation feature, but we don't like the voice feature. The voice is harsh and not very clear like the old model which doesn't speek the street names.

Digital camera Review: A very lost friend. Terribly frustrating.
Summary: 1 Stars

I gave myself a week to cool off after writing this review. We bought it to drive from VT to Florida and we made it to Florida and back to VT. That is why it gets one star. We would search for locations such as restaurants and drive 40 miles to one, only realize that in fact that restaurant never existed there but does in another state hundreds of miles away. We were told to drive over moving bodies of water, make U turns with huge concrete dividers and huge patches of grass in the way. We put in "no tolls" on the features through NYC and ended up paying $25+ in tolls and it took us over the same bridge twice...both ways. Incredible. This unit didn't have entire highways on it's map, showing us driving through the ocean or through dense woods, it did in fact tell us that were were on a "named road". We were told to turn at next right, turn now, only to get on a highway and forced to drive 30 miles in the wrong direction only to turn around. It does have a nice voice that says "recalculating" every time you stop to get gas, then takes over 5 minutes to figure out where it is again.

I've owned 3 GPS's

This honestly is just a terrible machine. It is fun at first and is user friendly, but ultimately useless.

Digital camera Review: A very nice GPS
Summary: 4 Stars

The 260W and the 650 are the best deals out there for a Garmin I'd say. For the same price both give you a widescreen, TTS, and North American Maps. The 650 has slightly better battery life and the capability of hooking up the antenna for real time updates. That being said I really like this unit. It's sleek and works like a charm.

Digital camera Review: A very nice system
Summary: 5 Stars

I haven't used this system much yet, but I'm pleased with it so far. I gave it 5 stars on reliability and points of interest, but haven't tested either. I did not find the time to acquire satellites a problem, though reading some of the other reviews helped me to expect that it might take a while. My previous GPS didn't have text to speech, and I really like it. Not mentioned in the reviews I've read is the ease of attaching and removing the mount to and from the windshield, and the ease of attaching and removing the unit to/from the mount. I was impressed that it came with enough charge in the battery to allow me to set it up without hooking it up to anything.
