I'v been very pleased with the nuvi 270. Nice compact size, finds satellites quickly, has a user-fiendly interface and comes pre-loaded with US and Europe maps. I have yet to use it in Europe, so it still has to pass that test, but so far so good. I would have expected to pay more for it given all that it offers. Garmin nüvi 270 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator
Purchased this unit just days before leaving for France. The unit included maps of both North America and Europe and was attractively priced so I decided to take a chance as we were renting a car in Aix en Provence and planned to drive throughout Provence. Our first stop however was in Paris where we would rely on public transportation and walking. The unit was not much help walking, however this was not my primary reason for purchase. A map works fine for walking and it is far easier to stop and figure things out while walking.
We traveled from Paris to Aix en Provence on the TGV. I turned the Nuvi 270 on while on the train and it tracked our position without a problem. It was interesting to see our speed and where we were, it also reported that we reached a maximum speed of 192 MPH. The unit proved its worth in the Provence area. We never got lost and we could always find our way back to our hotel. It was well worth the price, we were able to travel in a foreign country and never be lost. This allowed us to enjoy what we were seeing instead of trying to find our next turn.

My wife and I drove from southern Germany, through Switzerland, to the Aix-en-Provence, and all around the Provence region in France. This Nuvi was fantastic! It made driving around stress free. We were able to see things and go places that we never would have attempted otherwise. We purchased this just before going to Italy, when we found out that the cost of buying it was about equal to the cost of renting it from Hertz for 14 days. It saved us a huge amount of aggravation, as we didn't need to consult maps or try to translate from Italian to English on the fly. I did find that we went a circuitous way on one part of our trip, but we laughed about it--it took us through narrow streets in very non-touristy part of Pompei, but we got to see how the "real" people live. :)
Seriously, it was terrific and we travelled about 1600 km, going from Rome down to Sicily, and it was right on target. Now my husband uses it in the US, and if any of our kids are going to Europe, we will gladly lend it to them. Very portable, detailed and a great value.
