Digital camera reviews of Garmin nüvi 270 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator

Digital camera Review: Excellent choice
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought the Nuvi 270 just before visiting France and the UK. It comes loaded with maps for North America & Europe and works great. It made my trip in Europe so much better! It is very easy to use and the interface is very intuitive.
I highly recommend the Nuvi! It works great in the US and Europe and is small enough to fit in a pocket.
I even tried it on the plane on the way back from Europe and was able to follow the route and speed of the plane.

Digital camera Review: Excellent for Home and Family use
Summary: 5 Stars

EASY TO USE:
Out of the box it is a quick set up using the guide. I would suggest setting the HOME location using you street address instead of the current location you are standing inside the house (i.e. the family room) as it was hilarious on the first trial the unit directed my wife to the park behind our house. I connected the unit to my MAC and it synced up with no issues.
CAN BE PERSONALIZED:
It was fun to down load the different voices from the GARMIN site (i.e. you select them as an alternate LANGUAGE in your settings). Elford is a great driving partner for a minivan full of kids who laugh at his comments. Garmin has 3 views (accessed on the settings:map menu) to choose from and we use track up and 3D most often (the other is NORTH UP which can be hard to follow in your car; its a good walking map view).
A FEW FEATURES I LIKE
When you go to favorites and show map your address show on the map as you zoom out. You can use the NEAR feature to look up stuff near out of state places if you are planning a vacation (one of the reviews had a complaint on this which is simply unfounded). I do like how this unit give vocal cues timely (my buddies Garmin has a bigger screen but the voice prompting gives too many directions at once and mentions turns after they pass on small neighbor hood streets so you have to slow down some times to make sure the map has refreshed).
MISSING FEATURES (I HAVE NOTICE ON OTHER GARMIN UNITS).
Though this unit comes with Europe maps it has some feature differences. FAVORITES you key in don't appear en route to other places. Some units do this and also show the posted speed limit real time on the left side of the screen, which this does not.

Digital camera Review: Excellent value
Summary: 5 Stars

Like many first time GPS purchasers, I pondered over the pros and cons of several models - screen size, battery capacity, etc. Then realized that this model would easily serve my needs, more than 99% of the time. I live in Europe, travel across the continent as well as to the US several times a year and am quite fed up of paying up to 20 bucks a day for GPS rentals with Hertz. This unit has been used in both continents without problems. Its small enough that it fits in comfortably into the small storage area between the front seats of cars (along with the charger and stand) and has not failed me in any way. If you are looking for a cheap and reliable device to use on European holidays, purely for GPS functionality, you cannot go wrong. Other, more expensive options exist - but how often do you really use those additional features? At under 130 bucks, this was a steal through Amazon.

Digital camera Review: Excellent value for the money
Summary: 5 Stars

The Nuvi 270 offers both U.S. and European maps and the opportunity to update one or the other is included in the price. We have used the device in the U.S. and while it occasionally gets confused when you stop for lunch or gas, it is easy to restart when you get back on the road. It got us to the door of everywhere we programmed, even if we would not have chosen that route. For the money, highly recommended. It takes a while to get used to not knowing where you are or really caring.

Digital camera Review: Fabulous purchase
Summary: 5 Stars

We got this GPS system for use on a three-week car trip through Scandinavia. We've navigated through Europe before using maps and written or verbal directions. What an improvement! The reduction in navigator-driver (read: marital) tension alone was well worth the price (which was a bargain on Amazon).

We had no problem picking up satellites wherever we were. We could even get them in our hotel rooms most of the time so we could plan out how long a particular trip would take. The unit doesn't like being in tunnels for too long, though, so be sure to look for your next turn before entering the tunnel so you'll know where you need to go when you exit. Navigation was clear and maps excellent. The maps seemed up to date except for roads that had visibly just been moved within the last several weeks. Even on the remotest dirt roads in the woods (which looked and rode more like cow paths through some farmer's backyard), navigation was spot on. Directions for Europe's ubiquitous roundabouts were accurate and easy to understand. Recalculation speed is exceedingly fast. Battery life is good. Travel time estimates are accurate.

Being able to switch to kilometers while in Europe and then back to miles in the U.S. was helpful. A particularly nice feature was the warning about speed cameras -- which we didn't even know existed unit the unit started beeping and flashing red. The unit picked up the cameras and showed us the speed limits before we came upon the cautionary road signs. Another helpful feature was being able to simulate the entire route before heading out on the road either walking or driving. We also liked being able to set route preferences such as "avoid ferries".

We gave the Garmin nuvi 270 quite a workout in Scandinavia and have used it quite a bit since, and thoroughly like it. I'd buy this one again in a heartbeat, especially for the price.
