Digital camera reviews of Garmin nuvi 350 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator

Digital camera Review: A couple of bugs but overall a great GPS unit...
Summary: 4 Stars

Ive tried several GPS units from Magellan & Garmin & I believe the NUVI 350 was/is the best of them.

The display on the Garmin 350 is much cleaner than the Magellan 2000 or 3000 & the touch screen is far easier to use than all the different buttons on the Magellan. And when youre driving down the highway at speeds that could kill, you dont want something thats going to take your attention away from what youre doing.

Of the Garmin 330, 340 & 350 I thought the satellite reception was faster & more reliable on the NUVI 350. It always located instantly inside or out & the only time Ive lost reception was in a tunnel. Deep inside a tunnel.

I also preferred the compact size of the 350. However, that small size came with the price of reducing the speaker(s) to 1 small rear mounted speaker that faces the windshield. This probably falls under the heading of a "personal problem" as Im a long distance truck driver & the truck is fairly loud & Im fairly hard of hearing after a few years of these conditions. I dont use the NUVI 350 in my car but I suspect the conditions allow you to hear it much better.

My only other complaint ( and its a small one under that personal problem heading again ) is that you cant put more than two (2) destinations in at a time. You can put many different locations in the favorites or recently viewed list ahead of time & then just pick them when you get ready to leave your current or last destination. The NUVI 350 is very versatile & there are several "work arounds" to get what you need out of it.

Also, if you have no clue as to the address of a location but you do know or have a good idea where it is, you can use a stylus & (-) or (+) to pinpoint the location & then set it for routing. In this mode you can also use your fingertip to "slide" the map around to locate an area. Very nice & useful.

I also like the constant northern pointing arrow to keep me oriented, the 3D map & the clear direction & turn arrows. Theres also the stats & directions screens that are available at your fingertips. Very easy to read & toggle to & from while driving.

I havent used the mp3 player or the other functions available & probably wont. Although Id like to hear more from others about the traffic watch service as that could be a useful tool in the right place.

All the reviews Ive read ( although they were few )that didnt give the NUVI 350 at least 4 stars seemed a little silly. Nothing personal, they just seemed way over expectant. Its just a GPS unit after all...

Overall, the NUVI 350 ia a great tool. I spend less time looking for street signs & addresses & more time watching out for the traffic all around me. Im more confidant when going into larger cities & rural areas as well as streets & roads are clearly marked on the NUVI 350 even if there are no signs in sight.

Digital camera Review: A delighted purchaser!
Summary: 5 Stars

I read everything I could find on the Web about this unit and several of its competitors. I finally ordered the nuvi 350 from Amazon, and I'm thrilled that I did. It's as good as everyone claims it is.. and I can't help being continually astonished at how small it is!

The U.S. maps seem very comprehensive, finding small streets and shortcuts in Atlanta. I'm planning to buy the Brazilian maps and the Portuguese translation options (the built-in demo is very convincing) for travels in Brazil. Amazon's price was low enough that I can buy both of those and still come out ahead compared to local retail stores selling the exact same unit for $800!

Digital camera Review: A discontinued Classic

You can't buy this (new) from Garmin anymore but if you happen to find one at a yard sale at a used price ... Grab it!! It doesn't have Blue tooth, lifetime traffic updates and a LOT of the features on Garmins web site aren't compatible with it. But what it does do is get you from point "A" to point "B" JUST AS GOOD, if not BETTER than anything else on the market. It also has up to 8(eight) hours of battery life so if you want to use the "pedestrian" mode you van do so for up to 8(eight) hours. The battery is also pretty darn good too, since mine is going on 5 years old and still has at least 6 hours (the longest I've used it on battery power) of "juice to power it. I could go into a lot of technical reasons why this gps, if you can find one, would be worth SERIOUS consideration but most buyers are interested in "whistles and bells" like traffic updates and blue tooth and the fact that todays units only have a max battery life of 5 hours don't concern them. But 8 hours if your into Geocaching might be worth looking into.

Digital camera Review: A does everything GPS for a great price
Summary: 5 Stars

I purchased the Garmin Nuvi 350 about two months ago and couldn't be more pleased. This is the first GPS I have owned and I was trying to decide between a hand-held unit and a navigator for the car. This unit does both very well. I even use it to mark fishing spots in my boat! The travel kit with conversions and MP3 player is a real bonus. Everyone who has seen it wants one. The fact that you can slip it in your shirt pocket and use it while walking around an unfamiliar place is great. The built-in points of interest database is good also. I have used it to locate restaurants in cities where I travel and it is really great. Perhaps the best thing is the intuitive menu system. Really no need to read the manual, its that easy to use.

Digital camera Review: A few design flaws
Summary: 3 Stars

I have been using GPS on PocketPC for four years from Pharos. Recently I bought Nuvi 350 based on so many positive reviews. I would say I am not impressed by this unit. It does basic GPS functions O.K. But it definitely has room for improvement.

Pros:
1. Excellent voice prompt with street names pronounced.
2. Unit is compact.

Cons:
1. There is no way to organize favorites. Once you get a long list of favorites, it is very difficut to find the one you want. Adding folders can solve this problem.
2. There is no way to see the route from a place not current location or a city center. For example, I may want to plan my trip from my office to a customer's place when I am home. I cannot do that at all. The "View Map" function should let you specifiy the origin and destination with the antenna turned off.
3. I cannot tell from the screen how far away it is from point A to point B. Other GPS may have a tiny bar on the scrren tells you how long a mile is on the map.
4. Screen asset is not fully utilizied. 320x240 is the typical resolution of PocketPC. You actually can display a lot of information on the screen. But it looks like a screen with much smaller resolution with everything so big. For example, I would like to see how far away the destination is in miles. I only see the estmate time arriving the destination on the lower left hand corner.
5. Keyboard layout is not QWERTY. It is much more difficult to enter anything with alphabets arranged sequentially.
