Digital camera reviews of Garmin nuvi 880 4.3-Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator

Digital camera Review: Great Nav System
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this as a gift for my boyfriend and he loves it. It has many features that he loves to use on it like the music player. The speech recognition is OK. We sometimes have to repeat ourselves like 5 times to get what we want, but it works just as good without utilizing that feature. I would definitely recommend this product to anyone who is looking for a good navigation system.

Digital camera Review: Great Product

As advertised, this is a great product. One of the things I really like is the ability to find the best price for gas using MSN DIrect. Another, is the ability to give directions to the unit while on the move, using speech recognition. One disappointment is the traffic feature which has not been aware of the traffic I've been in. Oh well, you can't have everything.

Digital camera Review: Great Product But For One Thing
Summary: 4 Stars

This is my second nuvi, passed my 680 on to a family member. Got it for the hands-free. I'm delighted with the nuvi series, except the audio for hands-free Bluetooth phone is awful. They supposedly designed the 880 with two speakers <my 680 had only one>. But in order to hear the party on the other end, I must have the radio down, windows up, and AC on low. And yes, I had the audio out set to 100% volume.

Maps are Navteq with their old data (even with the 2009 software). Hands-free is great, I mounted the remote button at the bottom inside of my steering wheel for lease interference. I'm in a fringe MSN Direct coverage area, but I do get gas prices, stock reports, news headlines fairly well, and I expect coverage will only widen in time <since I got the lifetime subscription>.

I may go back to my Plantonics Bluetooth headset and just deactivate the phone part of the 880, but that's the only real fault I can find with the product (and shame on Garmin for not testing and fixing this in advance). If they'd put a mini output jack on the mount for the vehicle, at least one could stick a small speaker on the dash.

I have had my Garmin for 3 wks & love it. It is not as accurate as I'd hoped but has not gotten me lost in areas I don't know. I live in Huntsville & have used it mostly to get to places I know, trying to get there faster, but occasionally to locations I'm not familiar with. I was disappointed today when it tried to take me 3 streets further than my destination was & wanted me to backtrack to my destination. I did not see how that would save me any time. It does have a problem with the abbreiation drive "Dr"; it pronounces it "doctor" but it's really not a big deal. Overall I think it's great & it's quite accurate. I am very happy with it & love the hands free part of it except the text messaging through the GPS. When the bluetooth is activated on my phone, the text messaging is available on the GPS. I have tried to send txt messages through the GPS via bluetooth but the recipients did not receive the message until I deactivated my phone & sent another msg. through my phone only. Also it does not update the inbox msgs when bluetooth is activated; usually a day behind (sometimes up to a week) on the msgs that are seen on the GPS of my phones inbox. It does work excellently with making & receiving calls via the bluetooth.

Digital camera Review: Has such great potential.

I bought this GPS as an upgrade from the Garmin 350. I love my Garmin 350 and thought that upgrading to this 880 would be just as good and better, but I was wrong. The selling point for me with this unit was the speaking the name of the streets, voice command and the bigger screen.

I have to say the greatest feature of this GPS is the voice command. It worked very well when the car is completely silent, but you cannot have the radio on, or windows down while in voice command mode. The GPS will not hear your commands if there is any background noise. Another problem with this GPS is the speaker just isn't loud enough you can barely hear the voice prompts with the volume all the way up. I did not have this problem with the 350. There were also these annoying pops when the GPS was in voice command mode. The last is the price it's just to high for the features and the poor performance.
The voice command feature was so handy I tried hard to over look its down falls, but in the end I returned the unit. I will wait for the next generation of Garmin's.
