Bottom line: If you want more natural looking lighting in your pictures this is a great item. It does some really impressive things with my entry level flash unit (Vivitar series 1). This really lets you eek out somethings you might not have thought possible with the harsh light of a flash gun. It is not convenient, it is not ultra portable, but it really allows you to maximize your flash unit.
