Digital camera reviews of Gary Fong Puffer Pop Up Flash Diffuser - CANON/NIKONDigital camera Review: Brittle plastic mount. Beware... Summary: 1 Stars
This diffuser (the mount) is made of a brittle, cheap plastic that broke in two right at the hot-shoe mounting plate. I can't imagine the manufacturing cost is more than a dollar. Seriously.
If they could make the black mount part out of a flexible material and charge $9.95 for the product, then I would give it 5 stars. But alas this is not the case...
Digital camera Review: CHEAP DEVICE - IMPROVES FLASH PICTURES SOMEWHAT Summary: 4 Stars
If you are easy to satisfy, and/or on a tight budget, this is a good product to use for your flash photography. It is made of two pieces of strong flexible plastic that fit tightly together. Users have a choice of connection slots in order to accommodate various cameras. It does soften the light from the camera's built in flash and it is a solid fit that will not break even if it gets accidentally knocked off the camera - which is impossible.
The diffuser itself doesn't pop up. The user installs it on the top of camera (onto the external flash mount) and the built-in flash can either pop up when needed or it can stay in the up position The diffuser always stays in place until the user takes it off. (It's so simple, why am I elaborating?)
I think that once the initial production costs are paid, the inventor and manufacturer will make money on this device. This is a very simple but high quality little piece of equipment. Many thousands of smart amateur photographers will appreciate owning it.
I'll be using this accessory only when I'm unable to use my much more expensive off-the-camera flash set-up, but I am glad to have it handy for such eventualities when needed.
If you have a SLR with a built-in flash, and are going to use that flash, you should at least soften or defuse the light when possible.
Digital camera Review: Canon T2i - WILL NOT WORK Summary: 1 Stars
It won't work with Canon T2i :(
apparently when something is inserted into hot shoe of T2i - camera thinks it's external flash and disables the pop-up flash, so the puffer is useless.
I just wish it was stated in the description that it won't work with certain models.
It does work with T1i, Xs and it works great on those.
Digital camera Review: Changes the way you take pictures with the pop-up flash! Summary: 5 Stars
I love this thing on my Nikon D3k! You get great soft lighting from your pop-up flash. I hate to take my speedlight with me to a party and have to lug around extra batteries plus it just makes the profile of the camera too big for trying to be inconspicuous. This puffer allows me to get great shots and not bring a lot of stuff. Great product!
Digital camera Review: Decent, not great Summary: 3 Stars
Just got this and although it does diffuse, it doesn't do it all that noticeably. I realized quickly after trying to install it on my D50 that it isn't designed to go all the way in, presumably to avoid damaging the contacts on the shoe. It will do for the convenience of fitting into my bag when I don't want to mess with a full flash unit. As for full function - it's best used for reducing over-exposed highlights on your subject, but it won't completely disperse the light from the flash.
