Digital camera reviews of Griffin RoadTrip FM Transmitter and Car Charger for iPod (Black)Digital camera Review: Can't beat AMAZON's prices Summary: 5 Stars
I went to Best Buy the other day to hopefully purchase this item after reading the reviews on Amazon (I was wanting to use it right away and not wait for it to be shipped). Well, well, well, my eyes almost popped out of my head when I saw that the price was $95.00; DOULBE THE PRICE of Amazon. Needles to say I came home and ordered it. Thanks for the great prices.
Follow up:
Received the item (3 days later, fast shipping), IT WORKS GREAT. I live in NYC, once I was able to find an empty station, it played perfectly clear music. Easy to use, and I can't get over how much better the reception is than my brother's itrip. Highly recommend!
Digital camera Review: Clean output, low volume Summary: 4 Stars
I purchased this transmitter/charger/cradle for my 5G iPod Video in order to avoid the rather expensive alternative of installing a direct connection to my car's stereo. I drive a 2004 Honda Accord, and the contraption to rig a direct hookup from my iPod to the "changer connector" would cost me over $200 plus the installation. That system also gives you up/down track selection with the normal steering wheel or OEM radio controls. Sounds sweet... too much money, however.
The Griffin RoadTrip gets the basic job done. It holds the iPod fairly securely right up against the shift knob. So close, in fact, that the shifter pushes the RoadTrip to the right slightly when I set it on PARK. Fortunately, when I park, I also put away the iPod out of sight from prying eyes. The RoadTrip tends to muffle the sound a bit, killing some of the highs and lows. Also, the radio has to be cranked up quite a bit. This anomaly is related to the mp3 encode quality. I have some songs whose volume level sounds just fine, others are pretty low. Obviously the iPod and/or the RoadTrip are not the problem, it's the song file itself.
Nevertheless, the quality I get is good, not excellent, hence the four rather than five stars. This is as good as an FM transmitter gets. I don't recomment using the extension arm unless you ABSOLUTELY have to. It will not only make the iPod look like a taxi meter and an eyesore, it also wiggles while on the road. The newer generation RoadTrip doesn't have the same quality plug/arm gizmo... They screw on rather than twist and lock, and not as sturdily built. Fortunately I got the earlier "charcoal" version with the silver trim. Perfect for my black dash with silver trim and my black iPod. If you're in the Miami area, THE best frequency is 94.3. I use it from Miami-Dade to Broward county with little or no static. I recommend this product.
Digital camera Review: Constant Static Overlay Summary: 3 Stars
With this product I finally decided to just get a new deck that I can directly connect my MP3 player to. The constant static hiss laying over my music no matter what radio station I picked just proved too much. This is a problem with all products of this nature, regardless of price, brand, or over-all value. From what I hear, a few years back the things actually sounded good but due to instances of travellers getting other people's music beamed into their cars, manufacturers were forced to lower the power on these products. It's not worth it . . . get a new deck, or, if you're lucky enough to still have a cassette tape layer just buy yourself one of those tape thing-a-ma-jiggies what plugs straight into the headphone jack and goes in the tape-hole. Never thought I'd write that . . . tape-hole.
Digital camera Review: Crisp, clear reception ... and Apple styling/quality too boot Summary: 5 Stars
Excellent product. Can be bent and twisted to fit any dashboard configuation. Sound quality even on stations that are in use is exceptional (although finding the best station for your area may be hit or miss for a couple days ... 103.9 in north Atlanta works great for me). Whatever the technology, it completely masks any hissing or distortion. I do wish Griffin published a listing on their website of good stations to use for different areas of the country but I guess that might be a nightmare to maintain). Overall, this product is tops in a crowded field of some very weak performers.
Digital camera Review: Decent Transmitter Summary: 4 Stars
Bought this a very long time ago to go in my car for a radio with no jacks for my ipod. It worked decently and only real complaint I had was coming into the cities I had to change the frequency it was transmitting on because a station would be on the same one. Overall though it worked.
