Digital camera reviews of Griffin Technology PowerMate 1040-PMT USB Multimedia Controller and Input Device (Aluminum, PC/Mac)Digital camera Review: Easy setup Summary: 4 Stars
The powermate is very easy to setup and it works great, its very easy to get in and set up custom commands for different applications. The only issue I have with it is the push and turn commands seem to be harder to control than just turning.
Digital camera Review: Flakey performance with Mac OS X 10.4.x Summary: 3 Stars
This was among the best USB controller devices I've ever used. I've had it since Mac OS X 10.2 days. However as time went on and driver updates for this device became less frequent, it became unstable. Griffin has not updated the PowerMate driver software for 2 years. Their FAQ support page for this device has not been updated for that long as well. And now it is at a point where some features work and others don't. Sort of a hit or miss scenerio. Forget about getting this device to work on the new MacIntels. Oh Griffin, where art thou. I guess they are lost in the world of iPods. For that is all they develop for these days.
Digital camera Review: Frequent volume control and other usage Summary: 5 Stars
This device is very useful to increase / decrease volume in these situation:
- When you got a phone call
- mp3, game, internet radio, skype, and movie are all different volume.
- To take care your roommate in midnight
I just realized that controling volume with this device change my work style because I like to ajust the volume when I working on programming without breaking my concentration. Especially when I change Jazz to Classic music, I have to increase volume a little bit because most of classic music's volume level are low.
As for other usage, I use this for movie editing. I used to set the scroll to scrab the time line, but actually, zoom in/out is useful setting for Adobe Premiere.
Digital camera Review: Glowing is about it Summary: 1 Stars
I think the other reviews have it nailed - on the Mac it is of minimal usefulness - even as a volume control for iTunes, it ONLY works if you have iTunes in the foreground - which is an unlikely situation - usually you'd want to adjust volume or mute iTunes playback (i.e. for a phone call) when you were working in another application. If you have to click on iTunes to bring it to the foreground, why not just click on the control to mute.
On XP, as other reviewers have noted, the driver is buggy and hasn't been updated since 2004. If you are lucky the PowerMate will work for a few minutes - usually it does nothing at all in any application (oh - except glowing and pulsing!). Completely useless.
The Keyspan digital media and iTunes remote controls ARE able to control iTunes in the background - on both Mac OS X and XP - and they are what I use now in place of the useless PowerMate.
Digital camera Review: Great Product! Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this product to use with my Windows 2000 computer and it works great. I was expecting it to be only a volume control nob (which would've been fine) but it does so much more. The price may seem a little high, but I'd recommend it. I think it's a great product for the price.
