Digital camera reviews of Griffin iTrip Auto FM Transmitter and Auto Charger for iPod (Black)Digital camera Review: A winner Summary: 5 Stars
This is a really great product. I bought a second one to have on hand when riding in another vehicle or when using a rental car.
If you use the 87.9 frequency as others have mentioned, you will not have to change frequencies when driving anywhere in the U.S. Most car radios seem to allow you to tune the radio to 87.9.
The quick start guide does not tell you how to change the mode to International (International mode is required to have access to 87.9 on the iTrip). But if you hold the Preset button down for 15-20 seconds, it will eventually allow the selection of International mode.
If you set all iTrip presets (4 of them) to 87.9, you won't have to worry about the iTrip transmission frequency getting changed accidentally.
Digital camera Review: Affordable - charges iPod Touch - great sound! Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased this for my 1st Gen iPod Touch to use in a car that I bought on ebay and drove back home - 1200 miles. The car is an Acura RL - no aux input on the radio. The radio is very high end with bose speakers so I did not want to switch any OEM equipment out just to play my iPod. The advice from Eric Williams to change the adapter to work in international mode is very useful advice. Do that first and you will love this little unit. I have tried several other FM modulators and they all have weaknesses, but this one charges my iPod as it's plugged in, and the sound quality is almost perfect. At 87.9 it is working great. You will have some cross talk at times where a station may leak into your sound if a station is strong enough to interfere, but take a moment to set a few other presets and it works just fine. Trust me, I had 16 hours of driving with this thing, there are virtually no radio stations in Northern TX, OK, MO and IL that I drove through and this saved my sanity for sure. I was tempted to buy a "hard wired" FM modulator and have it installed, but I have read that many of those knock out your AM band, and cause interference with your other FM radio stations and in some cases disables the remote CD player - none of those options sounded good to me. So I have a totally stock set up with this and it sounds awesome! Note: everytime you turn off the car if your cig lighter shuts off, this unit will power down, your ipod will pause, this unit will need you to press the preset button to set the station when you power it up again. It does retain all your presets. It becomes routine, but at first it was frustating to me because I thought I had lost all my settings, but it did not.
Digital camera Review: Affordable Value Summary: 4 Stars
This is an inexpensive FM transmitter that works pretty well. Don't leave it in the cold or heat as it will damage the screen. I would recommend it though, I have two.
Digital camera Review: After a year, it's still going strong Summary: 5 Stars
I've had mine for over a year, and it's still going strong. I've never had a bit of trouble, and it works perfectly. It was well worth the 69.99 I paid for it, so it will be more than worth the 14.99 you will pay for it!!
Digital camera Review: Agreed, it is okay if you do not live in NYC Summary: 3 Stars
After I purchased this item, it basically sat in my car for a few months collecting dust. I live in NYC and there was no good reception, regardless of what station I put it on. It would sound acceptable in my garage, but the second I started driving around my music became inaudible.
HOWEVER...when I went on vacation to Cape Cod, the iTrip was absolutely wonderful. Granted, the audio quality was less than fabulous when the volume was turned up, but such is to be expected with an FM Transmitter. It only began to get the annoying static again when I was driving back and reached the Mt. Vernon area of New York.
So, if you do not live in NYC, and do not mind an ever so slightly muffled sound for your music, then it is a nice purchase. But if you live in the NYC area and thought you would purchase an iTrip for your daily drive to work, then do not bother.
