This is a sleek, cool-looking gadget, smooth and polished, with a tiny recharging cradle that makes the mouse look like it's floating in the air. It's definitely a functional, portable mouse, though a bit small for my tastes (and I'm a fan of Apple's just-made-obsolete Mighty Mouse). When you set it down on a flat surface, it automatically starts pretending to be a regular mouse. But there are plenty of cheaper and fancier normal mouses (such as Apple's upcoming Apple Magic Mouse). So the question is, really: Do you need an air mouse?
The air mouse idea has been around for a few years, and it does feel pretty cool: You pick it up, flick it around, and the cursor moves around on the screen, just like that! Unfortunately, it has no idea where you're pointing it, so the cursor doesn't respond in an intuitive way; it reminds me of the frustrating joystick nubs that laptops had in the early '90s that, thankfully, gave way to the trackpad. I think it's telling that, in the promo video on the Amazon product page, there are no useful examples of the air mouse capabilities in action. 90% of the pitch is that it's perfect for making presentations.
Let's look at its other advertised purpose first: "Clearly, motion gaming is way more fun than using a mouse!" the video claims. The success of the Nintendo Wii can attest to this, but is this thing really useful as a Wii-like peripheral? There are several problems with that idea, aside from the obvious lack of available games. It's a one-handed peripheral; game controllers are two-handed for a reason. It's very exhausting when used for long time periods; it has to be squeezed to keep it from falling out of your hand. And, most critically, it's impossible to click any of the buttons (which are on the top) without creating a downward motion. (To avoid this, the Quick Start Guide on the accompanying CD suggests that you "click and hold the in-air activation trigger then move the cursor over a target and release the trigger before clicking." Then you click and hold the in-air button in order to move the cursor again. In other words, each precise click you want to make requires three clicks!) How odd, that the promotional video urges you to "Start flicking instead of clicking!" Believe it or not, sometimes you have to click on something. Ideally, I'd like to click while flicking. But clicking while flicking is a problem.
That's one of the many problems with this peripheral, and it makes it hard to imagine how you could use this during a presentation without embarrassment. In the video, you see people striking through and circling text. Maybe you could learn to do that, with hours of practice. But clicking and dragging files around, or manipulating ordinary-sized control icons? Forget about it.
So, when might you want to use the Air Mouse? Suppose you're giving a presentation, standing on a stage with no podium, no flat surface for a mouse or trackpad. And your presentation needs a handful of clicks, perhaps on very large buttons. Is this gadget better than nothing? Sure. Could it be much, much better? Definitely. If you do take this thing to your next presentation, I guarantee that you'll wonder: Why on earth does a handheld presentation device not include a laser pointer?
