Digital camera reviews of HP 12C Financial Calculator

Digital camera Review: 1982 to the present....
Summary: 5 Stars

Just four days ago I turned on my trusty HP12C and the batteries were dead. I replaced them, but the calculator would do nothing when I pushed the buttons. 0.00 was all it had to say. I was devasted. I have had this same calculator since 1982. Can you believe it? I was absolutely amazed that the identical calculator is available today. It's the best tool ever and I can't imagine ever using any other calculator. Yes, it takes a bit to get used to the order in which numbers are entered, but once past that this calculator will do just about everything for you. I am still in awe - twenty-five years with the SAME calculator! Now I can pay my bills......

Digital camera Review: 25 Year Plus User Buys a Replacement!
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought the TI Datamath calculator the week they went from [amt] to [amt]. It would add, subtract, multiply and divide. Gee... was that about 1972? Then, I bought the HP-80 financial calculator a couple of years later. It was a big box predecessor to the 12-C. I got reverse Polish notation and great support. I remember having it escape from my coat pocket and crash to the street when I jumped over the hedge by city hall (I have been a very active REALTOR.) HP replaced the case and made it work again at no charge! Then, along came the 12-C, the subject of these comments. WOW! What a machine. I have used it since it first came out, so with the Model 80 I have been using HP financial calculators for over 25 years. Now I have misplaced mine, so I just ordered a new one. Of course, that will insure I find the old one soon. But, having two is OK.

A tip on using reverse Polish notation: I am right handed, so I learned to use the 12-C left handed by touch. That way, I can write with my right hand or point out things to the client sitting on my right, and get my calculations of monthly payment or NPV done (almost) in the background.

Enjoy!

Digital camera Review: A Fake, Cheap Replica of the HP12c
Summary: 3 Stars

This HP12c is not what I thought it would be. It is a cheap replica of the original HP12c that I repreviously owned, which was lost or stollen. I am dissapointed and was considering returning it, but it still does have all the features and capabilities that I was used to in the orginal, only much slower. It is light weight and not of good quality and solid like my orginal HP12c.

Digital camera Review: A Rare & Beautiful Thing: An Electronic Classic
Summary: 5 Stars

If you are a finance/real estate person this is IT. The All-time Classic and the Best. If you need more than a 12c you should have your laptop open to MS Excel.

Digital camera Review: A Very Sloooooow and OOOOOOld Calculator
Summary: 1 Stars

....This calculateor is really a piece of junk, and should deserve negative star rating. This calculator is build with 80s technology (too old, and should retire or simply die). Is HP a high tech company that providing us new and fast product, or a company that selling antiques. I am confused. Bond YTM and IRR calculations are very slow. It takes a few minutes to calculate some problems. TI BAII Plus can give you answers to any problem almost instantly. It's just fast. TI BAII Plus is also very user friendly (work sheet format). It's very easy to review the data. You need to RCL a register to review data with HP 12C. For some calculations, you can't even review the data, such as statistics. So if you have a wrong entry, then you know what you are going to get. Garbage in garbage out. Do you want that happen in the CFA exam?

I don't know why HP still keeps this antique around, and claims it's the standard of the industry. Give me a break. It may be the starndard in the past (80s), but definitely not the standard in the 21st century when time is everything, more than just money. How many 2-minute waiting periods can you afford to lose when you are in the CFA exam.

So, if you really want to spend that much money, then buy two TI BAII Plus calculators, use one for backup in the exam. TI BAII Plus is the best choice in term of price and performance. HP 12C is good choice if you want to give it your grandgrandgrand children for antique collection.

By the way HP stands for High Price and Horrible Performance. HP is no longer waht it used to be. It may be the "King of Inkjet" (it's becoming a thing of past with competitions from cannon and epson, and may lose the injet war in the future), it's definitely not the King of Calculator. HP lost the calculator war a long time ago. TI has the best calculators (scientific, graphic, and financial).
