Digital camera reviews of HP Color LaserJet 1600 Printer (CB373A#ABA)

Digital camera Review: Barely Bearable
Summary: 3 Stars

For the price, it should be better than bearable. HP seems to be riding on name recognition at this point. I've had the 1600 for 3 years and had no major breaks and can live with the toner cost due to our low volume. However, the negatives are outweighing the positives:

CON:
1) Red is under printing. We do mostly documents & presentations (school & personal), so we don't notice until we try to do a photo. We revert to gray scale because of the greenish skin tones. I have lived through the misery of HP service, so we just bear it.
2) Network printing? No way! We constantly have to fight over the one attached computer to print everything out. Major annoyance.
3) The noise, noise, noise! We have the 1600 in our TV room - the recalibration (always about 15 minutes after each print) is a lovely interruption to our viewing pleasure.

PRO:
1) Pretty bullet proof. Through pets and teenagers and luddites this thing keeps ticking. No big jams, no streaks, no problem with card stock. If only it would break so I can replace it!
2) Um, that's it. It's barely bearable.

Digital camera Review: Best Deal I ever got
Summary: 5 Stars

This is the best printer one can have. No problems so far and is working great. I am so glad I got it....

Digital camera Review: Cannot network connect it .
Summary: 1 Stars

This is a very strange result. If one uses a Linksys psus4 printer server the OS (Vista) recognizes the device and echos a network name for it; but when you try to install it as a printer the OS echos that it canot find it. What a failure! Do NOT buy this printer. ALSO HP and Linksys are at a loss as to how to fix this.

Gripe#2 If you do not set the printer drive for grayscale, the counters on the toner cartridges will decriment. That means that the printer will error out and require you to take the existing cartridges out and replace them even if they are still full of toner(ink). What a waste and expense. There is no way that I know of to get these cartridges' chips to reset to a reasonable value.

Digital camera Review: Cannot share printer on network
Summary: 2 Stars

Printer prints fast and great from the PC it is connected to, but when I shared the printer and installed on other computers in the network, it does not print from those PCs. The job gets queued on the "serving" PC but hangs in the queue. I have to restart the print spooler service so the job prints. Contacted HP and they said "We would like to inform you that this printer does not support network printing", I said, ok I know it doesn't support a network card but surely you can share it using windows file & print services and print to it from other PCs on the network. They said "No, we do not recommend sharing the printer through windows". What a joke. Who ever heard of a printer that couldn't be shared through windows. I still suspect their support personnel just don't what they're talking about and I'm sure I can get it to work by trying different drivers but to just come out and say that it doesn't support netowrk printing is lame.

Digital camera Review: Cheaper than the ink refills
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this printer only for the ink cartridges for my 2600n. I can sell the actual printer or throw it away. The ink is more expensive than this printer new.!!
