Digital camera reviews of HP Deskjet 6980 Color Printer (C8969A#B1H)Digital camera Review: A fix for a setup that works for 6980 for a PC and a Mac Summary: 5 Stars
After reading many of the reviews regarding setup for The HP 6980 Printer, I was driven to share a fix that works, as I have a tabletop Dell PC and a Macbook Pro. I too became very frustrated while trying to setup this printer.
The fix was to get rid of my old NETGEAR Router and purchase an Apple Airport Basestation ($180.00. Yes, expensive.... but it it lowers my blood pressure, etc., it was well worth it). Called Apple Tech Support (In The USA by the way) who helped me setup printer using ethernet connection for The PC and wireless connection for the Macbook Pro. (If, you have not used Apple Support, it is remarkable)
Now, the PC and The Macbook Pro works flawlessly with The HP 6980 Printer, each and everytime. By the way, The PC runs on XP (I wouldn't load Vista, even if Microsoft gave it to me for free). When working with Apple to setup, the Macbook Pro was running on the last version of Tiger. Once Leopard was realeased... I installed it without a hitch and the HP 6980 never skipped a beat.
Hope this helps someone out there. I think the HP # 6980 Printer is an excellent printer for home or small business usage. The only drawback for which I can agree with the previous review contributors on.... is the setup issues and HP Support from India, which leaves a lot to be desired.
In other words.... your old router (type, age and brand) might be the culprit... instead of The HP # 6980 Printer.
Digital camera Review: A solid printer Summary: 4 Stars
I purchased this printer in July 2007 and so far have no complaints. As others have noted, when this printer springs into action it shakes quite a bit. I have it set up in a printer drawer, so when it rock & rolls it doesn't bother my work on the desktop. Others have also noted that pages are ejected out the side and generally fall on the floor. I have an empty file folder that I slide under the paper tray, which allows the ejected pages to accumulate on top of each other instead of decorating the floor.
I have this printer installed on a wired network and have not seen any connectivity or printer queue problems from my desktop computer. Prior to setting it up this way I experimented with an ad hoc wireless connection to my notebook computer. This also worked fine, and I was surprised at the distance from which I was able to move the notebook and print OK -- upstairs, outside on the porch, no problem.
The printer seems solidly built. A big selling point for me is that this is an HP printer -- my HP Laserjet 4 MP (purchased in 1994) is still going strong!
July 2009 - I wanted to update this review, as it is now two years since I purchased the printer. It is still working fine, and I think by now I have tried all of the connection modes it supports. Shortly after writing the first review, I set the printer up as a USB printer and accessed it from several computers on our home (wired) network.
Then about six months ago I added a wireless access point to the network. I pressed the SecureEasySetup button on the WAP and the printer, and the printer joined the encrypted wireless network with no problem!
Well, actually there was a little wrinkle -- since my network doesn't have a DHCP service on it, I had to assign a static IP address to the printer. Since the factory-set IP address on the printer was on a different subnet, I had to change my network settings temporarily so that I could log in to the printer through its web browser interface and set its new IP address. But I was able to perform this setup completely through the printer's wireless interface because it joined the network with the one-button method.
Our Vista computer saw the printer as a wireless device and put it to work right away; the XP computers required a reinstall of the printer software. (Yes, you read that right -- Vista was actually easier than XP in this instance!)
Once this was done, all worked fine. Now I'm able to print wirelessly just by turning the printer on, instead of both the printer and its USB host computer!
Digital camera Review: All good! Summary: 5 Stars
This HP device is another good one. 2 sided printing capabilities, WIFI , Ethernet , USB and an easy driver setup will help you print a lot of pages.
My only problem is that the ethernet drivers are not supported in XP x64 (but they support Vista x64).
Digital camera Review: Amazing Printer Summary: 5 Stars
I recently purchased this printer and love it. I installed it on a wireless network that consists of a Mac (OSX) and Linux (Ubuntu) laptops. I had to use the Mac to set up the printer and get it going, but after that it was easy to connect my Linux machine to it (using Open Source drivers). The printer is fast and prints quality pages. I also love being able to manage the printer through a browser (handy for the linux machine). I have absolutely no regrets about purchasing this printer!!
Digital camera Review: An Awesome Printer Summary: 5 Stars
This is a great upgrade from my old printer. The set up was easy, taking about an hour. After reading other reviews that talked about how difficult the printer was to setup and install, I was hesitant to get started. I even bought a USB cable just in case. But the instillation was a snap. Just a matter of following a few steps, loading the CD, selecting how my printer was connected to my PC, and printing a test page to make sure everything was working properly. I never even touched that USB cable I bought.
The prints are awesome. The color and graphics are very sharp and look great. The software for the printer loads a program called HP Solution Center which allows me to easily change the printer settings and view helps if I need them.
I would gladly recommend this printer to anyone looking for a good inkjet printer.
