Digital camera reviews of HP Deskjet 6980 Color Printer (C8969A#B1H)

Digital camera Review: Don't listen to the whiners - it's a great printer
Summary: 5 Stars

Installation is easy if one merely follows the directions. The people writing about problems with the wireless setup are simply inept. I had it set up in ten minutes - nothing could be simpler. The print quality is great. Mine came with an additional 250 page tray and the two-sided printing feature which are listed as "optional" in the user's guide. I've got all four of my wireless computers connected and everything is perfect! Great printer!

Digital camera Review: Easy Wireless Setup
Summary: 4 Stars

I really wanted a good quality printer that allowed easy wireless printing through my DSL router. This one fits the bill. Simply connect the printer directly to your router with the supplied ethernet cable and follow the instructions. It took about 20 minutes for the software to install but once it did I disconnected the ethernet cable, moved the printer to another room and I am happily printing from anywhere in the house. I haven't printed a ton of photos yet but the few I did print look beautiful. Black and white document prints are quick and look great too. You may be able to find a cheaper printer but if you want easy wireless high quality printing you can't go wrong here.

Digital camera Review: Easy if your network works properly
Summary: 4 Stars

I read the prior reviews on this item before purchasing, and appreciated that they were mixed--it seemed like some folks had absolutely no problem, and some folks struggled a great deal with setting this printer up on their wireless networks. I followed the instructions in the manual, and initially it seemed like things were going just fine. However, when complete, I had a strange problem in which only the first portion of the page would print (like a few lines at most), then it would just stop. To make a long story short, it turned out that I uncovered a mistake in how my home network was set up. I had two wireless access points in my home, and each had a different "name." I think the printer must have been able to "see" both of these, and had problems deciding which to use (ok, that's my non-technical version of what was happening). After I set both access points to the same name, I was able to get the printer working on the network without any difficulty. Now it works just fine. It prints reasonably fast on draft mode, and the quality is good for my day-to-day work (I don't print pictures, so couldn't tell you about that).

There is still one "quirk," though. When I look in Windows task manager, I see that at times there are 10-20 copies of HP installed programs. I don't know what they all are, and whether they all need to be there. My computer performance seems to be ok, so I don't think they're slowing things down noticibly, but it is kinda weird.

Anyway, I really like the printer, and after getting my network properly arranged, install was easy.

10/28/07 UPDATE: well, the printer died on me. The black cartridge is no longer recognized by the printer. This gave me the opportunity to spend an hour with HP support. They were very nice, and after doing a bunch of "tests," they agreed with me that the printer isn't recognizing the black cartridge. They offered to send another one out. I won't go through the annoyance that was the exchange process, but you'll get a kick out of hearing that the replacement (which was refurbished, not new) did not work at all out of the box!!! Well, I'm waiting for yet another replacement. I'm pretty frustrated, because I like the idea of having a wireless printer for the house, but it's been a couple of weeks since I've had a working printer now.

11/4/07 update: I've gotten the second replacement printer. This one was new (not refurbished), and worked fine. I guess my final (at the moment) assessment is that I really like the printer, but I'm not convinced it's very reliable. HP Customer service was reasonable to deal with, and we got the issues worked out. However, consider whether an experience like mine would make you crazy or not before buying this printer.

Digital camera Review: Easy install, good printer
Summary: 5 Stars

I had this installed on my secured wireless network in about 10 minutes. It was incredibly easy, and print quality is as expected for a home use deskjet. I haven't printed photos or anything yet to check quality - I largely wanted a decent quality, wireless deskjet, that I could print to easily when I brought my laptop home from work.

Digital camera Review: Easy set-up on a Mac
Summary: 4 Stars

It seems most people having problems setting this up are on Windows machines or Windows/Mac or Windows/Linux networks. I just now set it up for my home Mac network, and it was pretty much a snap. I used the ethernet cable to connect it to my Netgear wifi router, and now all the Macs in the house can talk to it. The most time-consuming part was loading the software/drivers on the machines.
