Digital camera Review: A Good Product - But Even Better Service

I purchased the DeskJet F4280 a few weeks ago, after upgrading to a Vista 64 computer and finding that my old Canon scanner couldn't make the leap. The F4280 does a very nice job of printing, and the scanner seems quite competent. I especially like the way that it uses the scanner to auto-calibrate the ink cartridges. It seems to go through the ink a bit quickly, but the print quality is quite good. And all this for 60 bucks? You've gotta be kidding me!
But in this review, what I really want to talk about is the customer service I got from both HP and Amazon. When the printer arrived, it made a horrible screeching sound whenever it was feeding paper. I used HP's on-line chat to troubleshoot it with a technician. I was pleasantly surprised that the tech's ability went well beyond "update the driver" -- he guided me through cleaning the rollers, checking the paper path for obstructions, resetting the firmware, and other truly relevant checks.
Eventually we discovered that the paper rollers were rubbing on their plastic mounting tray due to an apparent manufacturing defect. The HP technician offered to replace the printer under warranty, but suggested that the seller could probably do it faster. I thanked him for his help, and went to the Amazon returns page.
Within three hours of requesting an exchange, I was notified that Amazon had shipped the replacement printer. When the new DeskJet arrived, I put the old one back into the box and returned it using a pre-paid shipping label that Amazon provided. Really, the whole thing couldn't have been easier.
The new printer is working fine -- and quietly.
