Digital camera Review: HP K5400 Printer, Beware of Printer Head Cartridge
Summary: 2 Stars

I just recently purchased this printer and I am skeptical about the so called "lowest ink cost". Yes, The actual ink cartridges are reasonable priced, but they don't really mention the two additional "printer head" cartridges that must be replaced along with the ink cartridges. The "printer head" cartridge cost around $69 dollars a pop. They don't mention the page yield for these "printer head" cartridges. I traded my Brother HL-2040 for the HP K400 which I now think was a mistake. If you can do without "color" then I would say the Brother HL-2040 Monochrome Laser Printer (retails for around $89) is your best bet in terms of long run affordability and print quality. You can get a Brother HL-2040 toner cartridge for around $30.00 (page yield: 2,400).

Digital camera Review: Have two and never a problem buying another for home
Summary: 5 Stars

We bought this to run a few thousand cards (3X5") per year Also use it as a standard printer a few hundred pages per Month. It's lighning fast and the ink lasts forever. We bought a second to replace another printer that runs maybe 5,000 color pages a year and have never had a problem with either one. There is an occational misfeed on the small cards but it prints 60 per minute! I know a large competitor is using a much faster printer but it cost $1,200 and the cost per page in consumables in much higher.

Digital camera Review: Printhead problem solved
Summary: 3 Stars

I was very happy with this printer until I started having printhead problems. I ordered and installed a new printhead and got the yellow flashing light that would not go away. I was ready to get a new printer when I decided as a last resort to try cleaning the holes that the printhead fits into with Windex on a q-tip. Now the original printhead works and the printhead health is rated "good" with a green circle, when before the cleaning it had a yellow circle.

Digital camera Review: if print heads go you just buy a new printer
Summary: 1 Stars

We use this printer for home/small office use and go through 20-30 pages in a week of text, maybe a little color. I bought this printer due to the large capacity ink carts and the promise of decreased per-page cost of a print. The speed is nice and the networking has not given us any trouble, however we connected to one printer on our network with USB and just shared it from there. I haven't tried connecting just to the hub.

As far as color goes, I am no art critic but it does OK on the few times we have used it.

We have had the printer now for 14 montbs and have only gone through two sets of ink carts (as I recall) due to our low use and the fact we do mostly black. But now the print heads are out. If you re-boot everything and re-set the head firmly you can get one of them to quit flashing on the control panel, but not both.

So I thought to myself I'll just buy new heads. HA! Depending on where you get them you have the price of a new printer if you buy both. And after reading all the reviews about this printer on the net it is clear this is a design issue with these printers and their print heads. Reading the reviews before I bought one is what I should have done before I bought it. My second mistake was thinking that HP would put the name OFFICEJET on a more durable printer, and that is why I was willing to pay more to get a better product. "You get what you pay for" didn't work in this case.

This would be a 5 star printer if it wasn't for the defective print head design (or print head detection, see below). BUT Do yourself a favor and don't buy this printer. If a consumable like the print heads can't be replaced at reasonable cost, i.e. less than a new printer cost, and they go out frequently, then you are going to buy a new printer every year, maybe sooner. And yes I went through all of the manual cleaning of the printer and heads as suggested.

I should mention that I took the printer down to the local printer shop because they had a k5400 that was working. We swapped out the print heads to see if it was just the print heads. Nope. Still wouldn't work. This may be similar those reviews where new print heads were put in and they still wouldn't work. The printer itself decides if the print heads are dead or not, regardless of whether or not the print heads need replacement. Either way you are dead in the water. Save the hassle. Don't buy this printer.

Digital camera Review: Avoid the HP Officejet Pro K5400
Summary: 1 Stars

We purchased this printer to serve a small appraisal office. The item is designed so it cannot print at all if even one of the color cartridges is empty. Shortly after warrenty the printer began registering "empty" even after installing a new ink cartridge, effectively putting us out of business until we can replace it with something useful from a reputable company.
