Digital camera reviews of HP LaserJet 3390 All-in-One Printer/Copier/Scanner/Fax (Q6500A#ABA)Digital camera Review: THINK TWICE BEFORE BUY - Summary: 3 Stars
I'd think twice before buying this machine again?
Some frustrations with this machine --
BEWARE if you have any other HP software on your computer --
When I went to install the 3390 software, it looked for other HP software on my computer and then proceeded to install itself as an old HP 1200 printer with no fax or scan functions. It refused to install the 3390 fax & scan software because it said the name of the product was incorrect! After wasting an hour or two reading the manual and trying to figure out what went wrong and uninstalling it 3 times, I had to call HP who ran into the same problem I did. HP had to bring in an expert who had me boot up in 'safe' mode and mess with the registery before the software would install properly. I only wasted about 5 hours on this problem!
The onboard set up menu sucks. The 'reports' could be much better. It wastes a lot of toner printing the HP logo and other stuff you don't need on the "reports".
The "manual" or users guide tells you how to set up, i.e., program in a speed dial number and group faxing but it FAILS to tell you HOW to use speedial or HOW to group fax! And the control panel does not make it intuitively obvious. The user guide leaves out some basic and needed info. And, since this machine costs quite a bit more than a couple of hundred dollars, why the heck can't HP spring for a pre-printed, bound, user guide to come in the box??? -- at least for the fax functions so the user guide can be kept near the machine without having to print it out and go to kinkos to have it bound.
The control panel is misleading. As soon as you put a document in the paper feeder to fax it, the machine begins to run it through BUT the machine then prodeeds to dial the previous phone number before you have a chance to key in a new phone number. The manual does not tell you the order in which you need to be pushing the control panel buttons to make it send the doc to a new fax number rather than just 'redial' even tho there is a separate 'redial' button.
For some reason when I hooked this up to my PC, it screwed with the fonts and line spacing as they appear in documents prepared using WordPerfect.
I bought this just before Thanksgiving and I've already had a problem with the paper feed. Also, if I stop a fax in progress and the document feeder stops with a paper halfway through (not a paper jam), there is no button to make the feeder clear itself. You have to pull the paper out manually and hope you don't tear it. My old Canon had a button that would run the paper on through the feeder if some function stopped with a paper in the feeder other than a jam. There should be some button to turn on the feeder rolls long enough to run the paper through.
I printed a "Fax Send Log" which contains the HP logo and prints a 'background' for no purpose that I can see except to waste toner.
AND -although the sent faxes appear in chronological order onscreen on the PC the 3390 prints the sent faxes listed in random order with no rhyme or reason -- not by date, not by size, not by phone number -- and certainly not in the order the faxes were sent. I've found no way to make it print the list in order -- either by date or phone number.
The 3390 does not give you a choice of cover pages when sending a fax directly from the PC -- there's only the default (that I have found) and it provides no options as to the content of the single default cover page.
When scanning, this machine does not automatically detect that a document is legal size. You have to remember to change the 'paper' setting to legal even just to scan (rather than copy) a legal size document. I've had some problems with the machine saying it was waiting for the PC before it could begin to scan despite the fact that the PC WAS connected and working and the PC and 3390 had been in communication 1 minute earlier.
The machine won't let you choose to print only a 'fax sent' report with all outgoing faxes (which I need with each outgoing fax in order to keep it in my file to prove the fax went successfully). If this feature is turned on, you get a "call report" with each sent fax, each received fax and each error fax whether in or outging. What a waste of paper and toner.
"Fax Call Report" is a stupid and misleading title for the report (for incoming and outgoing faxes) and each 'report' wastes lots of toner by printing the HP logo and the model # of this machine on EVERY report!
I've only had the 3390 for 3 weeks or so and would be a LOT happier with it if HP actually put the customer first rather than pasting its logo on everything the machine prints so the toner is used up quicker and I have to buy more from HP. The software that comes with it leaves a lot to be desired as does the onboard 'menu'.
And, the machine is not 'white' it is 'putty' colored which I don't particualrly like. HP should take a lesson from Apple about color! Pure white is better than putty but colors would be nice.
I'm not a computer geek but I can usually get around a computer OK and I've installed all my other printers, fax machines, scanners, networking, etc. but either I just cannot find the controls and adjustments for this machine OR, more likely, HP needs to make the 3390 substantially more user friendly and add adjustable options for the reports printed rather than offer only a default.
I suggest not paying full price if you want this machine. Wait till it's on sale if you gotta have it! I'm going to go take a look at Canon & Brother and other brands before it's too late to return this one to find one that's more user friendly.
Digital camera Review: Terrible product - avoid at all costs Summary: 1 Stars
This is a terrible product that you should avoid like the plague. After 20+ hours on the phone with tech support we had them send out a replacement, which has exactly the same problems, and I think the problem is their terrible software. Its software locks up the host machine at 100% processor use, the scanning is very poor quality when it works, which is seldom, and the printing locks up with random "49 error". It does send and receive faxes ok. I have an office full of HP equipment, and we had ok results with the earlier LJ3330 and LJ3380 models, but this is trash.
Digital camera Review: Two Thumbs Up for printer and Amazon Summary: 4 Stars
I had this sent free shipping. As usual Amazon sent me an email saying it would be 2 weeks and it showed up in 3 days. I think they just do that to try and get you to buy better shipping.
Printer works great! Quick, quiet and has very nice features. I love that it prints on double side, I just wish it could do double side copying like the brother. My only other thing I would like is if the flatbed was legal size. But over all, I give this an 8 out of 10 score.
Digital camera Review: excellent product Summary: 5 Stars
This is my 2nd multifunction printer. My previous one, which cost about the same, made by another company, had all sorts of configuration problems. Even after configuring, things had to be re-done. This HP Multifunction works great right out of the box. Had it about 2 months and no problems whatsoever.
Digital camera Review: it tech Summary: 2 Stars
Clean new install, works great. 1st trouble or re-install, send it (scanner) to the trash bin, tech support very expensive & useless. Simply cannot be re-installed. This is the 2nd hp scanner we've had w/ the same failure to reinstall problem. We've had 3390 for about 2 - 3 years, prn still works great on all 4 computers on the network, scanner has not worked in 3-1/2 years on the same computers on the same network.
