Digital camera reviews of HP LaserJet P2015dn Printer (CB368A#ABA)Digital camera Review: A winner (earplugs not included) Summary: 5 Stars
Whenever I see monochrome laser printer reviews that doesn't put either HP or Canon on top I have a hard time taking them seriously. Granted many other brands beat the pants off of HP and Canon in many ways, including initial purchase price, but rarely do reviewers mention the shock the owner of other brands will get when they find out they have to periodically replace drums or fusers at a cost equal to or greater than what they paid for the whole printer. That is where HP and Canon shine ... their machines have an all-in-one replacement consumable unit. Monochrome laser printers are sort of a dying beast and it shows in what the manufacturers are offering. Anything decent actually costs more than a color laser printer anymore.
But a good monochrome laser printer can't be beat when it comes to raw speed and low cost per page. Considering how many things many of us print where we don't need color, having both a monochrome laser and a color photo inkjet makes a lot of sense.
After a lot of shopping I found two units that seemed to be the best buy. The HP P2015DN and the Canon MF-4150. I almost bought the Canon, because it had everything in one unit including duplexing and it was being sold for just over two hundred. The reviews of it are consistently excellent. I didn't choose it because I already have a good ink jet all in one and a dependable fax machine. I also disliked one design feature of the Canon having to do with its manual feed tray, i.e. to print a manual page you have to stick the page deep into a hard-to-align paper well.
So I got the HP at an excellent price after rebate. I was replacing an HP 1200, which still worked after many years of regular use, because a new printer wasn't that much more than replacing the toner cartridge and buying a jet direct card, which I needed to print from my downstairs computer. And I really liked the idea of having a printer with a duplexer.
The design of the P2015DN is more traditional than the 1200 (I never did like the print tray extending out the front). Considering how quiet the Canon AIO was I had high expectations the new HP would also be quieter than my old 1200. Wrong. When you read in these reviews that it is noisy, believe it. It is well beyond reasonable to sit on the desk next to me. I am looking for a way to hide it in a cabinet under the desk. To be fair, the noise only lasts a few seconds and stops immediately after printing.
It is fast as well, I barely click the print button and the page shoots out a few seconds later.
The bottom line is it looks pretty rugged, the cost per page will probably be one of the lowest of any brand or model, and it is really small for what it does. To me it just squeaked in to earn a 5 because the Canon's are a lot quieter.
