Digital camera reviews of HP Officejet 6310 All-in-One Printer

Digital camera Review: 6310 free from a garage sale
Summary: 5 Stars

My roommate is a garage sale addict and to my dismay he brought home this antique looking HP6310 all-in-one printer/scanner/copier/fax. I didn't think we needed a new printer and figured that this one would be dead on arrival due to the fact that someone gave it away for free. After plugging it in, I was absolutely correct. The machine did cut on, but it seemed to be stuck in a mode as if the printer's lid were open even though it was closed. Therefore it wouldn't accept any commands. I discovered that when the lid is closed, it's supposed to push down on a plastic tab to let the machine know that the lid is closed. In this case, the lid no longer had the ability to push down on the tab. To remedy this, I applied a strip of felt (the kind you put on the bottom of furniture so that your floor doesn't get scratched) in the area where it could come down directly on the plastic tab when the lid is closed. To my surprise, the printer became fully operational.

I then hopped on Amazon and bought those cheap refill inks for a total of $14 (color and b/w). Installed the inks and voila, the printer actually prints with no problem. I tested the copy function and that worked perfectly as well. I just put 7 pages of a contract on the paper feeder and then used the scan function in Adobe to create a 7 page pdf. The paper feeder worked like a charm. It pulled each paper in one at a time, scanned them, and then spit them back out with ease.

One drawback I haven't been able to yet figure out is how to start the scan process from the buttons on the printer rather than from Adobe. We didn't get any software discs from the previous owner so I'm guessing that my software for the HP8450 and C3100 took care of any necessary drivers. I may have to go hunting for additional drivers specific to the 6310 in order to get the "scan to" button to work on the machine. Other than that, I can't say that I have any complaints about the HP6310. Of course when something works this well and didn't cost a thing what else could one expect.

It's true that this printer doesn't have designation for envelopes even though it's billed as an office printer. I overcame this issue by first cutting paper to the size of an envelope and putting it in the paper tray, marking the right corner that's facing away from the printer with an "X". I also drew a flap on the paper so that I can see where the printer is printing in relationship to the flap (and on which side). Then I created an envelope sized template in Photoshop (300 dpi). I put the return address and send to address in the template and pressed print. The printout showed me if I needed to rotate my template and where to place the send to and return addresses. Now I use this template for any envelope I need to print.

Digital camera Review: A Boat Anchor
Summary: 2 Stars

had a 6210 that worked great for 1 1/2 years and then died. luckily had extended warranty so exchanged for this 6310. i have been fighting this for 3 days now and swapped out the new unit for another new unit. installed over and over but can't get scan to work. print function works fine, even when computer says unit is disconnected but it is hooked up and turned on. scan just will not work and get error message that no connection to unit, even though print works and all usb drivers installed. hp trouble line no help, just uninstall and reinstall over and over and over, etc, etc. something missing, but who knows what.

Digital camera Review: A PIECE OF JUNK....
Summary: 1 Stars

I bought this item in April 2009 and have been on line with their support at least 5 different times for an hour at a time. It prints and then it doesn't print. It is a nusance. It takes two minutes to warm up to print a single page.

Digital camera Review: A bit junky
Summary: 1 Stars

More low end junk from HP. I've had numerous problems with this printer mostly related to the print cartridge error issue, which is well documented. Unfortunately I don't the time required to try and get this thing to work every few days. It's getting tossed into the trash at the first opportunity. Print cartridges are insanely expensive too and require frequent replacement even for low usage. I would not recommend this product to anyone for any reason.

Digital camera Review: A good machine to have!
Summary: 5 Stars

I am really pleased with my HP 6310. Before this I had a Brother All-in-One. It was always doing a self cleaning. I went through ink like crazy whether I was printing or not. This machine has worked well for me. I've had it for probably close to 2 years. I keep it set on "fast/economical" print which doesn't use as much ink and it prints really fast, especially if you are printing a longer document. I think the printing is pretty good for typical home-use documents in this mode. If a document has graphics I will often choose "regular" printing, because sometimes it doesn't blend the colors really well in fast mode. People often start laughing and are startled the first time they hear it print like this because it does sound funny. My ink has held up well for me. I only replaced the ink a few times and I use it pretty much.

If anything would happen to this machine I would not hesitate to replace it with the same product unless I would decide to go with a laser printer.
