Digital camera reviews of Hammers HP1 Anti-Shock Hiking Pole with Compass & ThermometerDigital camera Review: A great product for its price but the price is low.... Summary: 3 Stars
I must say I am really please with this hiking pole. I actually had a pair of leki spins that I never used because it just felt cumbersome and awkward moving stride for stride with my arms. I ended up buying this because it is cheap and has a camera mount. I received a nice camera with a long range zoom and needed something to stabilize it while hiking. I thought this would end up lashed on my pack until I needed a picture taken but I was wrong!
I love this thing. On my first couple trial walks with it I found myself wanting to have it out more and more. I now use it whether I'm on flat ground or ascending slopes. I like that I don't have to lift and move it every stride of my foot. I tend to take 4 steps (2 per foot) before move the pole forward. When climbing slopes it allows me to take steeper angles than possible without it.
There are a few flaws with it. The biggest one is this thing is a little noisy. It is like the rods are vibrating against each other every time I take a step. A small amount of electrical tape wrapped around the pole helped but it is still noticeable (my lekis were silent). Also the shock adsorb can go on and off multiple times over a hike. This is because when the pole dogs deep into the ground and I twist at all it is possible to both engage and disengage this feature. The last annoyance is that sometime the shims in it screw too small. When this happens you can spin all you want and it wont tighten. To fix this just pull the longer until you see the mechanism and spin them a little wider and push back in. It only takes seconds but can be annoying. (for those saying they didn't tighten on arrival I wouldn't be surprised if this method fixes it)
Seriously worth a try getting one of these even if you don't like trekking poles.
